534) Istanbul University to hold Armenian conference March 15-17

Following the controversy over an Armenian conference in Turkey last year Istanbul University is holding an international conference on "New Approaches to Turkish-Armenian Relations" March 15-17.

Twenty-four academics from the U.S., Israel, Armenia, Germany and Britain are invited to the conference, as well as 30 Turkish academics, explained Professor Safak Ural, rector of the university and coordinator of the conference, yesterday.
Ural stated that Hrant Dink, the Turkish-Armenian editor of Armenian daily Agos, is to chair one of the sessions at the conference.

"Our aim is to discuss historical fact, not to debate the concept of 'genocide.'" The matter will be discussed from an academic point of view, and a new page will be opened," said Ural.

Among issues to be discussed at the conference are "The Armenian Problem from a Historical Perspective," "The Armenian Problem from a Political and Military Perspective," "The Armenian Problem from a Legal Perspective," "The Armenian Problem and the Security of the southern Caucasus," and "The Armenian Problem from a Cultural, Psychological, Philosophical and Humanitarian Perspective."
