Armenian Terrorist Confesses to Tossing a Grenade at President Bush in Tbilisi Georgia
Washington, DC (July 28, 2005)-Following a shootout that claimed the life of a senior police officer in Georgia, CNN reported on July 21, 2005 that 27 year-old Vladimir Arutyunian, a Georgian citizen of ethnic Armenian background, confessed from his hospital bed to throwing a live hand grenade in the direction of US President George W. Bush and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili in an attempt on their lives during their high-profile joint appearance in Tbilisi on May 10.
Georgian television aired clips of explosives, detonators and chemical substances, reported to be found in Arutyunian's home, in addition to electronic equipment and military literature-all elements that could potentially be used to make a bomb. Georgian officials have also reported that the failed grenade was made in Armenia.
This is not the first report of weapons originating from Armenia being connected to terrorist activity. In March, Artur Solomonyan, an Armenian citizen living in New York and Los Angeles was charged with weapons-trafficking. According to FBI the suspect proposed selling weapons to an FBI informant who was posing as an arms buyer with ties to Al-Qaeda. The dealer supplied digital pictures from a warehouse allegedly in Armenia, showing caches of Russian-made weapons (according to Washington Times, Armenia received $1 billion in illegal arms from Russia between 1994 and 1997). The complaint against the Solomyan charged that the defendant knew that the weapons may be used for terrorist activities in the United States, particularly for bringing down commercial aircraft.
This latest incident in Georgia should not be taken lightly. Armenian terrorism has a long and deadly history. The attempt on the lives of Presidents Bush and Saakashvili is yet another example of Armenian terrorism exported abroad since 1973. Between 1973 and the present Armenian terrorists have committed 239 acts of terrorism, which have killed at least 70 and wounded 524 innocent people. Of those attacks, 30 were committed on American soil. According to FBI, between the years 1980 and 1986, Armenian terrorism accounted for the second highest number of terrorist incidents in the United States. The latest cooperation between Al-Qaeda and Armenian terrorist groups is disturbing and calls for a serious response from the governments of the United States and Armenia.
