503) French Ambassador to Yerevan Accuses Turkey

YEREVAN and ANKARA (JTW) - French Ambassador to Armenia Henry Cuny argued that Turkey's membership in the European Union will become possible after it settles all the matters with the neighbor-states. "If Turkey wishes to join Europe, it should do it with open borders," the Ambassador underscored adding that Turkey should not wait till the completion of the talks but undertake precise steps now, reported IA Regnum. . . .

However Turkish experts and media accuse the French. "There is no connection between Turkey's EU process and the Armenian issue" says Dr. Davut Sahiner. Dr. Sahiner says the French Ambassador is biased about the issues regarding Turkey like many other French diplomats and politicians: "Many French politicians use the Armenian and Cyprus issues to hide their real intention about Turkey. They try to prevent Turkey's EU membership. They see Turkey is not European because is is not Christian. If open borders is a EU principle so France should open its borders to the Turkish Cyprus business."

Dr. Nilgun Gulcan from USAK-ISRO finds strange the French ambassadors comments: "Mr. Ambassador blames Turkey for the closed borders between Turkey and Armenia. However Armenia does not recognise Turkey's national borders. About 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories has been under Armenian occupation. And Mr. Ambassador says nothing about the Armenian occupation. It is easy to accuse Turkey' because Turkey is the only open society in the region."

Dr. Gulcan argues that French had played very dirty role in the Armenian issue: "France was behind the Armenian terrorism during the National War and then the Armenian terrorists found a secure home in France during the 1970s. And now France should play a constructive role in Turkey-Armenian problems instead of undermining the stability in the region".
