Armenia promised to restore an old mosque in the country as an answer to the restoration and the opening of the historic Armenian Holy Cross Church on the island of Akdamar, near Van in southeast Turkey. This information was given to Culture Minister Atilla Koç in Van. . . While Turkey has restored the church, spending YTL 2.6 million, the deputy culture minister of Armenia, Gagik Gürcyan, conveyed the message that an old mosque either in Yerevan or in another city will be repaired, reported the Milliyet daily yesterday.
Armenian Culture Minister Hasmik Pogosyan and Koç first met for the KIEV Initiative in Ukraine on Sept. 15, 2005 and Koç mentioned the restoration and invited him to the opening of the church. There Pogosyan said they followed the process and as a response to this generosity they will restore a Turkish-Islamic mosque in the country. Pogosyan noted his promise by his deputy in Akdamar at the church's opening who conveyed the message.
