Surp Mesrop School at Its Thirtieth Anniversary
In late May 2008, the Armenian community of Alfortville, a Parisian banlieue (suburb), was celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the 1978 establishment of the Armenian school of Surp (Saint) Mesrop in the neighborhood. Alfortville has been receiving Armenian migrants since the 1920s, and in addition to the school, the city has an Armenian culture center, the Armenian church of Saints Peter and Paul (established in 1929 by the ? rst wave of Armenian refugees from Anatolia), a Protestant Armenian church, and a plethora of social and political clubs. In the coffee houses so essential to the everyday life of the neighborhood, patrons speak Western and Eastern Armenian in addition to Turkish.
