On-Line Discussion Continues - Latest as of April 18, 2011:
(For the initial comments of Sinan Rushtini, please see the earlier correspondences under neath of this section.)

[by MACREAU/Sinan RUSHTUNI]

Bircan Hanim,

I am not going to debate the whole Armenian question with Mr. Aya. His views are identical to the Turkish Governments view, thus it is redundant to go back and forth. He may try to contradict 146 Genocide scholars' views on a TV show and try to sway some uninitiated opinions to his side but what we have witnessed on the world wide academia of genocide studies makes it "deveye kahve icirmek."

[By Sukru Server AYA]
Give my best regards to those "lazy-sloppy-biased academia" and invite them to refute the documents I show; they are all authentic documents! If they are the "three-monkey-type" scholars, too bad that there are so many of them defending genocide.

We need no sloppy scholars to dupe us with their unfounded palavers. History is written by DOCUMMENTS, no palavers, no big mouth persons giving sermons a century later. Sorry, you have to swallow and digest these documents Mr. Rushtuni... If you do not have the guts to admit truth, why do you comment for the second time? In 2008 you had written that I cannot even speak English? Now you try to defy documents simply by "numbers of grand-ma-story-teller-schollars"! If that is enough for you, be happy!

Sinan RUSHTUNI: One last question which I asked but Mr.Aya did not answer. It is a straight forward question. Why does the Berlin archives contain many documents and copies of telegrams sent by German officials from Turkey , succinctly describing the genocide? Was not Germany war time partner of Turkey? Why would your partner describe murders, massacres of Armenians to their HQ in Berlin?

Sukru Server AYA-Reply: From text of "Treaty of Alliance" dated Aug.2,1914, signed by Ambassador von Wangenheim and Said Halim (Grand Vizier).

* * * * *

Sukru Server AYA-Reply Continues- Par.3: In case of war, Germany will leave her military mission at the disposal of Turkey. According to the previous agreements, which were effective immediately, between his Excellency the Turkish war minister and his Excellency, Chief of the German military mission, Turkey on her part assures said military mission of an effective influence on general command of (Turkish) army.

Par.4 : In event of a threat Germany pledges, in case of need to defend territory of Ottoman Empire with arms.

Note to article 3: The Turks desired this wording in consideration of fact his Majesty the sultan is commender in chief of Turkish army. General Liman, however, officially informed me beforehand he has effected a detailed agreement with War Minister Enver Pasha which guarantees actual command to military mission.> (above lines were underlined by S.S.AYA. L.M.)

Last Word: Above excerpt prove that German General Liman von Sanders was in total command of the Ottomany Army and hence bears FIRST Responsibility. General Bronsart was deputy War Minister and he was signing directly on behalf of Enver Pasha! Your question should be directed to German authorities, to explain this paradox!

Question: ASK YOUR REFERRED 146 SCHOLARS WHY THEY DID NOT KNOW THAT GERMANS WERE IN COMMAND OF THE TURKISH ARMY AND TURKISH ARMY FOLLOWED THEIR ORDERS! This is the DEAD END ANSWER TO LAZY SCHOLARS AND RESEARCHERS from an old man, who took the matter seriously! I would not be surprised if they "cannot find even this document"! But they make declarations by hundreds!

Bye bye Mr. Rushtuni...You are free to believe in what you want, which is not TRUE! Unless you or your 146 scholars cannot prove any of my given documents and excerpts to be wrong, please do not wrıte me ever agaın (unless you learn first)!

"Dear Sir,

Without going into details of Mr.Aya's "Conversation " with you and analyzing it I would like to make few comments.

He mentions a very obscure Fresno, USA. newspaper cautioning its readers about believing the genocide of Armenians because it could not be true. Fine, that is the opinion of that particular newspaper's editor. How come he is not mentioning other USA newspapers of the time ? Let's go briefly over them:

The New York Times:January 11, 1915 Title ...Says Turks advise Christians to Flee

January 13, 1915 Title Christians in Great Peril
March 20, 1915 Title Whole Plain Strewn by Armenian Bodies
March 22, 1915 Title Turks Renew Massacres
April 28, 1915 Title Appeal to Turkey to Stop Massacres.
July 29, 1915 Title Wholesale Massacres of Armenians by Turks
August 6, 1915 Title Armenian Horrors Grow
August 18, 1915 Title Armenians are sent to Perish in desert
September 17, 1915 Title The death Of Armenia
Septepber 27, 1915 Title Tales of Armenian Horrors Confirmed

Current History: October 1922 Issue

Title Crimes of Turkish Misrule

There are many other publications to mention but we have no room here to list them.

Here is the clincher that Aya does not mention. Of course how could he, it would destroy his "truth" United States has the official records on the Armenian Genocide. Has Mr.Aya ever read any of them? If he did, probably did, why does he not mention them?

Here is a partial list of documents that expose Turkish atrocities and genocide of Armenians:

FILE NUMBER

NA/RG 59/867.4016/350
NA/RG 59/867. 4016/386
NA /RG 59 /867.00/739
NA/RG 59/867.00/ 760
ETC..ETC..ETC..

There are too many enumerate here. It is quite obvious that Mr.Aya is very good in choosing and picking information to fit his agenda. Thus, his key words " moral values", " Truthful" "decent" are good only on paper and not in practice.

Oh...yes...he is very eloquent in his presentation of misrepresent facts, innuendos.
The most probably you will not post these lines as it does not fit to your agenda, nevertheless thank you for your time.

Sukru Server AYA: I am not clear if I am to respond to Macreau or Sinan Rushtuni; it is not so important for me, but I don't want to be part of any later mud slinging. The commentary is very politely worded and I give my short time attention.

Sinan RUSHTUNI-2: There is no mud slinging Sukru Bey just disagreement on your analysis of events.

Sukru Server AYA: First of all, I think that I have mentioned that butcheries have been bilateral. I had to give some examples to contradict the claims of innocence and victimization!

Sukru Server AYA: 2: I am glad that there has been some positive change from time I received a Macreau comment about the presentation of my book in April 2008. (See posting)

Sinan RUSHTUNI-2: Every action and reaction has degrees of severity. I have not read your examples, I am sure they look quite convincing, that contradict victimization and innocence. It seems that you have not gone to the core problem of Turco-Armenian relastionship.

Sukru Server AYA: I did not “write” books, I just “compiled excerpts from neutral or anti-Turkish sources” and shared with readers, leaving the conclusions to each one. It is not within my authority to make psychological analysis. I am objective and only laid “plain documented facts”!

Why should people of the same region, (may be same DNA), totally interlinked in their life principles, be affection or brutality differ when it colmes to "race, nationality or faith"?

Sinan RUSHTUNI -2: Good question..It is a known fact that the Sublime Port has left the Eastern provinces to their own device. It is also known fact that Armenians were the pions of Kurdish tribes. In 1860's a delegation of Armenians from the region of BULANIK (in those times if was a region not the city like today) go to Sublime port to complain their mistreatment in the hands of Kurds. The "Vezir" of that time threatens to put them in jail and tells them if they are not happy where they are , they could be replaced by Cherkez tribes. This was the culmination of mistreatments that spark the revolutionary fervor. After this date self defense forces started to form to protect their lives, belongings etc.etc. which was the start of the Armenian political parties.

Sukru Server AYA-2: I did not elaborate about the Ottoman rule, (the sick man of Europe, pray of imperial powers to be partitioned) and of course with administrative corruptions, which prevail even today in many “very familiar countries”! The “self-defense forces” (?) was a natural continuation of the national inspirations which had started in Greece and expanded in the Balkans and were supported by Christian Super Powers, plus teachings of the Missionaries!

Sinan RUSHTUNI-2: You mentioned mutual atrocities. I am not denying that. BUT....yes there is a BIG BUT....You fail to mention ( conveniently) the time line.. The genocide started in 1915 , however the Armenian atrocities started much later in 1917. The feelings of revenge by Russian Armenians to avenge the massacre of their brethren was quite understandable, considering that according Herbert Lock " homo homini Lupus". Man are like wolves, they eat each other (wolves are not cannibals, just his misconception")

Sukru Server AYA-2:
a- Refer to “Armenians-1915.blogspot.com” enter # 1449, read Dashnaks Manifest given to 1910 Copenhagen Socialist Congress, detailing revolution readiness!

b- What started in 1915 end of May, was TEMPORARY RELOCATION (after the City of Van was conquered by Armenians in mid April) and not GENOCIDE!

c- Refer to (above blog) #2187 for excerpts from Pastermadjian’s Book “Why Armenia Should be Free” or view the whole book at the end of posting #2429, my book presentation, see that Armenian Volunteers had taken oath and action in October 1914 (War started on Nov.2nd). Read details about the service of Armenians to Russians in Nov.1914 when entering East Anatolia, and also their great assistance in reversing the Turkish Sarikamish attack, which ended in disaster in late Dec. 1914 – early 1915, whereby some 80.000 Turkish soldiers perished.

d- What started in late 1917 was the Armenian mass killings in Erzurum-Erzincan when Russians had quitted the front and Armenian forces were retracting towards Erivan destroying all villages en route!

Sukru Server AYA-1: suspect that "my words may not be enough and they will have to be supported by strong references". Given the amount of "hair and reference counting" I am afraid that my "word to word" response and references may end up in not less than 6-10 pages. Such a long lace-work reply can only be done over the weekend and if you can wait until Monday... you have to tell me now, so I reserve my weekend for this! Otherwise, I give the following "condensed answers" within my general knowledge by heart, and not sending time on evidencing sources.

A. N.Y. Times: Without exception, all Christian newspapers, needed news against Muslims to meet the expectations of the readers. Propaganda-Information was one of the top war weapons, conducted from the Wellington House, by Lord Bryce and Arnold Toynbee. "Reuters" was the ONLY NEWS agency distributing news from London by cable all over the world. Why should the British distribute any news favoring their enemy, the Turks and Germans? The first rule of journalism is: "If a dog bites a man, that's no news, but if a man bites a dog, that is the news". My examples were the exceptions which escaped the world censorship by chance or mistake. Yet in the early and middle parts of 1915, there was two American Journalists right on the Dardanelles front, one was the Associated Press Representative and the other the Chicago Tribune correspondent; both had come from Germany and evidenced the Dardanelles war. We find several other references in Morgenthau's diary regarding his conversations with the A.P: representative who later wrote an excellent book, with dependable neutral (?) observations.

The "appeals to stop massacres" (even before landing and relocations) was a simple propaganda tactic to threaten Turks and cause disagreement within their government.

The A.P. correspondent wrote that "massacres was only a joke or simple world brain washing"! Which one of these British-American sources should we credit ? I would go for the Asoc.Press man. The news Reuters got was from Sofia, cables sent by Armenian "translators-dragomans" to Sofia, with exaggeration or distortions were transferred to London, where they were re-fitted for world distribution. If you need verbatim references that may take a few pages, you have to wait until Monday.

Sinan RUSHTUNI -2: I am sure these correspondents wrote what you say they wrote..but isn't it convenient for your purpose? Among many , many reports of massacres you cherry pick the one you see fit and disregard the others as "propaganda". Let's say for the sake of argument that they were "propaganda" by the enemies of Turkey. How about German archives? Your ally during the war. Is there any reason why you patron and ally should disclose those massacres to their HQ in Berlin?

Sukru Server AYA 1: B. CURRENT HISTORY: I have not used books, other than those of Armenian leaders and historians. I am basing myself on the reports of American eye witnesses (General Harbord 1919 Report) and Captain Emory Niles & Sutherland detailed expedition reports. For additional support I have Russian generals' reports, Armenian Memo to Paris Peace Conference, Armenia and Settlement booklet of British and Antranik's speeches in London... Why should "Christians" write anything pro-Muslim, when they were there to convert Muslims into Christianity? There are almost ONE million documents in the open - classified Ottoman archives and I have not used one.

Since the Dashnak archives are closed and will remain closed not to show the blood soaked pages or braveries, I have used some Armenian historians who gave some hints about the Armenian archives they used partially. Again, if I start counting it will take pages...But all these have been on the internet in my first book and so far no one could refute a single reference. Why not read my book and over 2000 verbatim excerpts, and write to the blog your objections or errors you discover? Let us be punctual, precise. They are all in the "armenians-1915.blogspot.com" E-library. My findings has been on the open buffet for years; just tell "which one is not true"; please don't expect extra room service!

C. MORAL VALUES: For better coverage, I would suggest that the parties read my London Conference on Jan.30,2009, posted since then on the "armenians-1915.blogspot.com" under Number 2730 and again under number 2733. Parties who disagree with what I shared with my audience in London, can send their comments for posting as counter comments.

Last Word: Very few of us got in this "fanfare of grudge and hatred, because we want to defend truth, whatever it is, and settle for reason and compassion". Those who want to drag us into a mud slinging or hate war will not be able to see us in that arena. But we can donate some photos showing elementary school children being taught how to use arms and kill Turks and become staunch enemies of the humankind!

Sinan RUSHTUNI-2: I agree with you, by the same token how about Turkish history books where Armenians are the "enemy" and from the first grade to high school the enemy is either Greek or Armenian... I remember from my school days when the history teacher would talk about the Eastern front and talk about treacherous Armenians " yok..ama siz onlardan degilsiniz" what kind of statement is that? If this is not mud slinging, what is it??

Sukru Server AYA: I would not enjoy "hating anyone" especially Armenians with whom I always got extremely friendly! Did I make myself clear? How many of the E-books or documents have you studied Sirs? Why you insist in looking at only one face of the muddy or bloody coin?

How can any one jump into so many conclusions without reading anything other than a friendly one hour interview?

Sinan RUSHTUNI-2: You are wrong. Nobody is jumping into any conclusions just rising questions to your analysis of past events. One last question : Do you think that USA Official Archives have fake documents???
-Sinan Rushtuni

Sukru Server AYA 2: a) To the best of my knowledge the British could not find any “valid document” in the US Archives so that they could indict some 144 Ottoman dignitaries held in Malta for trial for over 2 years. If you had read my analysis about the “distortions and some lies” of Ambassador Morgenthau, you could have seen that the Missionary Reports were biased, pro-Christianity/Armenianism. The answer is that “they were not fake documents, but they were grossly exaggerated and distorted." For example, the Relief Report speaks of 1.414.000 Armenians alive at the end of 1921! According to your evaluation “this must be true because it is official”! If I was asked privately I would have said that the figure was inflated so that more financial aid could be secured. We learn from Katchaznuni and Lalaian’s books that the population of Armenia in early 1918 was One Million, but during the two year Dashnak rule 195.000 died of starvation and epidemics in Armenia. Hence the population should have been 800.000 + about 120.000 in Western Anatolia or a total of about 950.00 at most.

Of course there are a lot of "massacre talks"nin the US Congress and Senate minutes, but what counts is the General Harbord and Captain Emory Niles reports, plus the statement of League of Nations Secrertary Dr. F. Jensen in the official gazette in 1928. These are all shown in my last book. Most paragraphs were posted by armenians-blogspot.

b- Apparently, Rushtuni is not even aware that the overall command of the Ottoman Army was entrusted to Germany or General Liman von Sanders; and this was one of the conditions for the 5 million Ottoman Gold coins they gave as credit with 6% interest to Turks to enter war. General Bronsart von Schellendorf was the general staff and deputy acting on behalf of the Turkish War Ministry. The orders were given by Germans, carried on by Turks as per agreement. Germans did not even accept the "Sultan to be shown as Commander of All Forces"! These are all shown in books and some in PPS presentation. Sorry, no special personal service for those who do not learn first!

"Dear Bircan Hanim,

a- As you know, we have to go through other blogs in Turkey to access "armenians-1915.blogspot.com", while you can just click!

b- Macreau is a well known reactioner. Going back to some old postings I found the followings, and you are welcome to know my past efforts, better!

* My book "The Genocide of Truth" presentation was posted under No. 2429, and can be still unloaded from there, plus five later attachments of documents.

If Macreau or alike had done their home work, they should have been careful in critizing my interview. Read and learn for yourself.

* A few weeks later Ara Baliozian had sent a Book Review under No. 2444 which I had replied. At that time Macreau had added the following comment

THE GENOCIDE OF TRUTH. By Sukru Server Aya. 702 pages. Illustrated.
Index. Bibliography. Istanbul: Commerce University Publications. 2008.
----------------------------------------------------------

This book's contents are not surprising at all. Just consider the following : The author is born in 1930 and is the product of Turkish educational system (read as glorified Turkish history). I even bet that he does not read or write any foreign languages so that he could consult foreign sources dealing with the events of 1915.

As a matter of fact another nail was nailed to the coffin of Turkish spinmeisters. Until today we all talked about Austrian, German sources, and NOW we have found Swedish sources in Swedish archives dealing with what we all
know.....the Armenian genocide perpetrated by Ottomans.

Let Mr. Aya bask under the sun of is Turkish masters..."

Hello again,

Mr.Aya's still does not give an answer to my last question.

Nobody talked about who was running the war machine. I certainly did not raised the question. Mr.Aya is coming out from nowhere and talking about the lack of knowledge of historians' ( lazy according to him ) as who was in command.

Every child from the fifth grade ( at least in Turkey ) knows that Germans were the big boss'. This is was not the question.

If no massacres ( I am not using the word genocide, because you will probably claim that word was not invented in 1915) took place WHY Germans were sending telegrams to their Head Quarters in Berlin exposing these massacres?. These documents are available in Germany.

Why should your wartime boss lie about it if it is not true?

Here is one sample from Count Wolff-Metternich

German Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire July 10, 1916, cable to the German Chancellor

In its attempt to carry out its purpose to resolve the Armenian question by the destruction of the Armenian race, the Turkish government has refused to be deterred neither by our representations, nor by those of the American Embassy, nor by the delegate of the Pope, nor by the threats of the Allied Powers, nor in deference to the public opinion of the West representing one-half of the world.

Here are some Turkish views :

Turkish Quotes - Beginning with multiple quotes from the 3 rulers of wartime Turkey, Cemal Pasha, Enver Pasha and Talat Pasha:

Enver Pasha: "One of the triumvirate rulers publicly declared on 19 May 1916..."

The Ottoman Empire should be cleaned up of the Armenians and the Lebanese. We have destroyed the former by the sword, we shall destroy the latter through starvation.

In reply onto our underlings and I am entirely willing to accept the responsibility myself for everything that has tato US Ambassador Morgenthau who was deploring the massacres against Armenians and attributing them to irresponsible subalterns and underlings in the distant provinces, Enver's reply was...

You are greatly mistaken. We have this country absolutely under our control. I have no desire to shift the blame

Talat Pasha: "In a conversation with Dr. Mordtmann of the German Embassy in June 1915..."

Turkey is taking advantage of the war in order to thoroughly liquidate (grundlich aufzaumen) its internal foes, i.e., the indigenous Christians, without being thereby disturbed by foreign intervention.

After the German Ambassador persistently brought up the Armenian question in 1918, Talat said "with a smile"...

What on earth do you want? The question is settled. There are no more Armenians.

Cemal Pasha To a German officer upon seeing the deportations in Mamure said..."I am ashamed of my nation (Ich schame mich fur meine Nation)"

Minister of the Interior of Turkey publicly declared on March 15 that on the basis of computations undertaken by Ministry Experts...

800,000 Armenian deportees were actually killed...by holding the guilty accountable the government is intent on cleansing the bloody past.

Prince Abdul Mecid: "Heir-Apparent to the Ottoman Throne, during an interview..."

I refer to those awful massacres. They are the greatest stain that has ever disgraced our nation and race. They were entirely the work of Talat and Enver. I heard some days before they began that they were intended. I went to Istanbul and insisted on seeing Enver. I asked him if it was true that they intended to recommence the massacres which had been our shame and disgrace under Abdul Hamid. The only reply I could get from him was: 'It is decided. It is the program.'

Grand Vezir Damad Ferid Pasha: "Equivalent rank in the US would be head of the cabinet I think. He described the treatment of the Armenians as...

A crime that drew the revulsion of the entire humankind."

Mustafa Arif - Minister of Interior stated on 13 December 1918: "Surely a few Armenians aided and abetted our enemy, and a few Armenian Deputies committed crimes against the Turkish nation... it is incumbent upon a government to pursue the guilty ones. Unfortunately, our wartime leaders, imbued with a spirit of brigandage, carried out the law of deportation in a manner that could surpass the proclivities of the most bloodthirsty bandits. They decided to exterminate the Armenians, and they did exterminate them.

Of course those Turkish quotes are all lies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing but mud slinging..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What did Mustafa Kemal say about these massacres that did not happen (!!!)

Founder of the modern Turkish Republic in 1923 and revered throughout Turkey, in an interview published on August 1, 1926 in The Los Angeles Examiner, talking about former Young Turks in his country...

These left-overs from the former Young Turk Party, who should have been made to account for the millions of our Christian subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse, from their homes and massacred, have been restive under the Republican rule.

Sincerely
Sinan Rushtuni

Dear Bircan Hanim,

This is the very last message on Mr. Rushtuni because he is an incurable fanatic, unwilling to reconcile or look to both sides of the "bloody and muddy" coin! I had indicated at the very start that "butcheries were bilateral" but he insists to portray a totally innocent - victimized Armenian, and place the blame for everything (even when fighting against revolutionary rebels -traitors) on Turks, and now says that he knew that the boss were Germans! So, why you do not accuse Germans but show me some correspondence of the German ambassador who came after Wangenheim died, and did not know even what his predeccessor had signed?

In my essay posted by "armenians-1915.blogspot.com" under no. 2610, (you can refer to), I had given verbatim quotes not only from Pastermadjian's book (which apparently he still did not read to accept the words of this great Armenian patriot), but more important I gave quotes from the official memorandum of the Armenian Delegation to
Paris Conference, in which their treason is confessed in detail. They had asked a huge land "free of no Christians" and claimed that they are over a million to fill up that huge area... and this was only 5 months after they had expressed their thanks to Sultan Vahdettin in Istanbul on Sept.6, 1918!.

There are HUNDREDS of pages describing Armenian atrocities, the most remarkable being that of Captain Emory Niles. I am attaching a few other excerpts I started to pick but quitted since it will take tens of pages.

CONCLUSION: Armenians in the Western Anatolia (also Protestant and Catholics or families of those in official jobs) where they were no threat, were not touched. Those in strategic areas were relocated (including the innocent ones who forcefully had to feed-support the revolutionists), rarely some attacks by brigands did happen, 48
gendarmes were killed in fights, but some groups have been robbed, some nice girls kidnapped by some Kurdish tribesmen, some Armenian children took refuge in Moslem houses and shown as Moslems while some converted willingly to escape relocation. Death toll was heavy and equal on both Armenian and Moslem population, owing to epidemics and starvation. There were no young Turkish men in the villages, all were
in the army.

Turks did not give flowers to Armenians, when they found all their houses burned, families killed! I have nothing further to argue with Mr. Rushtuni who is saturated with hatred and grudge, which may be he needs to satisfy his ego. I will appreciate if you do not forward anything more by this stubborn person which inssists in "not reading
anything that may distract his prejudice"!

(P.S. about Pope Bendict's efforts to stop the war refer to my new book. In early Feb.1916, Morgenthau had gone back to USA and the new ambassador Elkus was still in USA; despite diplomatic status, USA was not neutral during 1914 - 1927! Re Mustafa Arif on Dec.18, 1918: The Ottomans had surrendered on Oct.30,1918 and a puppet Ottoman Government was in charge! )

For RUSHTUNİ - additional selection, annex to posting TA 2610
(From A. Nassibian – Britain & the Armenian Question” )

P.76: The German ambassador had once stated that they ‘appear to be pure invention.’ He was also said, however, to have defended the Turks, action as a necessary wartime measure… However, it was generally believed in Washington that no official action would be taken unless American missionaries or American property suffered wrong.

P.90: Djemal Pasha, as commander of the Fourth Army, was himself ‘furious’ that the deportees were sent to far-away Mesopotamia, thus hindering the movement of the Ottoman troops, instead of being resettled in central Anatolia.

P.97: During the war, the Caucasian armies, including Armenian volunteers, had crossed the Turkish frontier and had occupied three of the six Armenian vilayets. Now with the disintegration of the Caucasian front, not only these provinces but also that of Erevan in the Russian Caucasus were in danger. Who would defend them against the Turks? Moreover, Armenians did not know what objectives they were being asked to fight for. They were uncertain and worried about their future. About 150.000 Caucassian Armenians had loyally fought in the Tsarist armies.... But in the re-conquered portions of Armenia, Armenian landowners had been evicted and Tatar and Cossack settlers put in their place... Thus, it was mainly in order to stimulate further the war efforts of the Armenians on the fast-disintegrating Caucassian front that the British leaders found themselves necessarily having to make generously sympathetic statements about the liberation of Armenia.

Antranik:
P.106: Furthermore, various Armenian groups outside the republic’s frontiers, went on fighting the Turks even after the Treaty of Batum. Thus General Andranik (Ozanian) the ‘quiet, dignified and soldierly’ hero of the Turkish-Armenians, the officer for whom the British War Office had ‘a good deal’ of respect, had been fighting of the Turks the whole way back to Erzerum to Karabagh. He ‘absolutely refused’ to make peace with the Turks, minuted a member of the Foreign Office staff. Denouncing both signatories and the Treaty of Batum for handing over the Armenian Plateau to Turkey, Andranik continued his fight in Zangezur.. Likewise, in Baku, it was the nationalist Armenians, in an unholy alliance with the local Soviet, which to a large extent kept the Turks out of the oil center until 16 Sept.1918, that is only about a month before the Armistice of Mudros was signed. For Caucasian Armenia, there was first of all immense human burdens of the thousands of refugees, the remnant of the decimated population of Turkish Armenia. There was also, initially, the necessity

P.115: … the gallant resistance of the Armenians in defense of their liberties and honour… He also referred to the Armenian soldiers ‘still fighting’ in the ranks of the British, French and American armies, and to the part they had borne in General Allenby’s great victory in Palestine.

P.156: The Turkish Armenian leader General Andranik and his partisans entered Zangezur in July, destroyed a number of Moslem settlements, and brought the central region of the country under Armenian control. On 2 December 1918 Andranik and his volunteers crossed the Karabagh border. Within a few days the Karabagh Armenians might have come under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Armenia. General Thomson, however, commanding at Baku, sent instructions to Andranik to stop all military operations and return to Zangezur. Thomson approved Azerbaijani government's choice of Dr. Khosrov Bek Sultanov, a notorious Armenophobe, as the Governor General of the two regions. At the end of 1918 the Armenian government had expelled a number of Moslems from Daralagiaz and repopulated the villages with Armenian refugees

P.209: Kemal ‘gladly’ accepted the offer of mediation. He added that the Turkish government had postponed military operations in the provinces of Kars, Ardahan and Batum on receipt of Chicherin’s note. In 1920 Armenian troops moved into Olti, a district rich in coal, on the Russian side of the pre-war Russo-Turkish frontier, as a preliminary step towards the Treaty of Sèvres. Bekir Sami claimed that Olti formed part of the Ottoman Empire under the Treaties of Brest-Litvosk and Batum. He therefore requested the withdrawal of the Armenian troops ‘without any delay’. The Armenian government however, rejected both treaties as bases for the relations between the two countries. The district was an incontestable part of the Armenian republic. Having signed the Peace Treaty with Turkey, Armenia would await the decision of the President of the United States and was not crossing the former Russo-Turkish frontier. Thus, in the summer of 1920, Armenia based her claims on the Treaty of Sèvres; Kemalist Turkey on the Treaties of Brest-Litvosk and Batum although Brest-Litvosk had been renounced by Soviet Russia in the autumn of 1918

P.219: The crushing Treaty of Alexandropol left Armenia with a territory of 27.000 square kilometers: Kars and Surmalu, including Mount Ararat would go to Turkey; Nakhichevan and Zangezur would become Azerbaijani protectorates; Armenia would be permitted to have a detachment of only 1.500 soldiers equipped with 20 machine-guns and 8 cannons; compulsory military service forbidden. Turkey would have the right to supervise goods entering Armenia. Finally, Armenia would declare the Treaty of Sèvres null and void; the representatives of the Allies should leave. The only Armenian state permitted by Karabekir was a tiny protectorate wholly dependent on Turkish goodwill.

The renunciation of the Treaty of Sèvres by Armenia had been the pre-condition for Turkish negotiations. But it had also been the only major condition asked by Soviet Russia in return for her mediation in securing the pre-war Russian frontier. She had in addition agreed to recognize her independence. The offer was rejected. Had it been accepted, Kars and Surmalu might have been within Armenian territory, the war might have ended earlier and Karabekir’s troops would not have wrought death and destruction as thoroughly as if they were committed to annihilation.

From James Grabill, “Protestant Diplomacy & the Near East:”

P.59: “ When Enver’s forces moved across the Russian-Turkish border through the Bardiz pass, Russian-Armenian volunteers held them up at Sarikamish. This Armenian effort gave a Russian military unit to group and defeat the Turks. After this failure, The Committee became convinced that Turkish Armenians were traitors, that not only should the police imprison and execute them but the Army should shoot them.

P.60: The Turks fled. Next, Armenians burned and murdered: the spirit of loot took possession of them. Soon Turkish civilians found shelter and medical treatment in the American Board compound. By August 1915 the Russians had retreated toward Tiflis, with Americans and Armenians joining the exodus. Amid epidemics in this awful withdrawal, Mrs. Ussher and another missionary wife died. Ussher himself barely survived successive cases of typhus, pneumonia, and dysentery; Yarrow nearly succumbed also.

2444) Sukru Aya's Reply To Book Review by Ara Baliozian . . .

Reply To Book Review
Part – I

The reader seems to have read all of the 700 pages, more than 1500 verbatim excerpts in less than 2 weeks and could write his book review based “NOT ON THE EXCERPTS” themselves, but “my opinions”- presumed by him.

I thank for the compliment of “mammoth compilation of quotations and documents” but reject the annexation of the word “polemics” because I left the appreciation and judgment to the reader’s choice. I would prefer criticism for the few notes and explanations “I did write” and not for what others wrote or said! The sources are all promptly given and the responsibility lies with those who wrote them, and not me! This research was made in person, trying to get behind this historic incident, which, in my personal idea, is a huge distortion of a human brutality, as a result of opposing aspirations. It is a reaction to the shallow studies made by several scholars. This research was not delegated on to me; I could have been an Eskimo, or Tanzanian or . .
else, but I do happen to have a Turkish ID, which makes the difference to the reader and not to me. Hence, the essence is to be “objective and digestive for whatever we read” and does not give us the right to be “selective on what we read”, nor “accepting everything that has been written”, as the only truth! It is because of this concern and desire of neutrality that, certain events were quoted from diverse sources, leaving judgment to the reader!

I could not understand why my birth year is worth mentioning, unless I should expect some flowers on my birth date. Am I too old, too young, impaired, what?

The date 24th April 1915 is important for Armenian diaspora only; it has no historic significance because:

  • a- Armenian Revolutionary Volunteers had taken Kars in mid April 1915! 80.000 Moslems died; only 1.500 was left alive. This conquest is evidenced also by photo from Pastirmadjian’s book. (my book’s page 529)

  • b- It is known that Enver Pasha gave a verbal warning to Istanbul Patriarch after the Van conquest, to quiet down, or else! This was taken as a bluff! On April 20th (see annex) the Military Order signed by General Bronsart followed, asking “immediate evacuation of War zones”. Since the Patriarchate had not assured cooperation, the same evening 235 notable persons, (some ringleaders or persons believed to be behind the revolution) were arrested! According to this posting # 2441 and speech of Ara Sarafian, they were taken by train to Ayas near Ankara (70) and (150) sent to Cankiri by carts, where they were set free inside the city, reporting to the police in the evening. Six weeks later, some 20 of them came back to Istanbul (may be Protestants and Catholics). None of the 235 was condemned to death! Innocents could have been rounded up alongside guilty ones; it happens! Wet wood burns alongside the dry wood… Worse dramas happen in peacetime!

  • c- If the critic indeed had read my book, he should have noticed the excerpt ref. #5, on page 268, with my explicatory note on page 298 which referred to the arrest of the 235 persons. The day is significant, just because it was on the eve of Dardanelle landing by Anzacs on 25th April.

  • d- Regarding alleged 1.5 million victims, it becomes clear that the reader has not seen Chapter 15, page 303, line (l) report of French-Armenian land distribution Committee dated March 1st 1914, showing total Armenian population as 1.280.000 and only 542.421 in East Anatolia. Those who disagree may object to those who prepared this report “just before two inspectors arrived in May 1914 for two autonomous areas”!

  • e- Readers can also refer to the joint US Congress/Senate report # 192, dated 22.4.1922, and inquire how come that those who prepared this audited monumental report, declared that a total of 1.414.000 Armenians were alive on Dec. 31, 1921! (# 2335 on this free library)

  • f- I am not any judge to decide about the responsibility of bilateral crimes. Chapter 29, includes various solid newspapers as evidence. As regards who killed first or more (like if the hen or egg) on page 652, the Dutch Newspaper of 25.5.1920 gives a good idea as regards how and why reciprocal brutalities happened. The Swedish paper of 23.4.1917 with the article of Swedish Officer Pravitz (page 127) and German paper on page 657, as well as a sack of U.S. newspapers gives quite an idea, and readers are independent to decide the way they see and evaluate. I do not remember any statement of mine claiming that the Ottoman State cannot be held responsible for the crimes, when they were fighting a war of “life or death” on three fronts, with Armenian revolts and 5th column activities in the rear! Plenty photos can be seen in Pastirmadjian and other books. Remembering that the Americans of Japanese ethnicity were interned in prison camps or that the Jews were rounded up for death when they had not revolted, or that the Americans took no war prisoners in Okinawa but killed all, the decision of “relocation for military needs” is the most lenient measure that was possible. This of course, does not release the State from the responsibility of proper protection or feeding (when their 80.000 soldiers had just perished at Sarikamish because of the resistance of Armenian volunteers and lack of food and clothing). The Moslem deaths much in excess, do not originate from my comments, but what was reported at that time! One pyramidal truth is that the Dashnakist-Hunchakist Armenians from Russia, instigated REVOLTS all over Anatolia, collaborated in full with the enemies (Russians, French, British) were in actual internal war as traitors to their own country, who had provided best existing opportunities in the past 600 years! Armenian diaspora have hundreds of books on their heroism with photos, but now forget them all!

  • g- Regarding failing reporting properties: I can be responsible only for the truth of what I saw and quoted! Further responsibility belongs to the genuine author or source! I am no advocate of the Turkish State or any office or authority!. No one delegated any such authority or duty, or paid me one cent or promised to print my work! Unfortunately the naivety of most Turkish correspondents and officials continues. There are very few aware of my compilation or updated like Turkish Armenians! Although there is no doubt that many emigrants sold their properties at low prices and buyers used day’s advantage , we also have evidence (Pastirmadjian’s book) that the bundles packed and stored in the Erzerum Cathedral were untouched and protected, until the Russian Army occupied the city and General Kalendine was the first to loot the carpets and properties. Needless to guess, that every one robbed the other party for whatever they could get! I have quoted some sections relative to the lootings of Kurds and Turks and Armenians vice versa! However, the Ottomans court martial more than 1670 persons, hanged 67 found guilty, and punished the rest, other than some 400 found innocent. Whether justice could be done in full, is questionable but at least the leaders did not endorse such banditry. However, there is not even one Armenian ever found guilty by any Armenian authority and terrorist criminals are honored with medals. Worse cases persist even in our modern days! Yet, the tunes whistled by the humpbates, “to kill, loot and walk freely over the mountains” is unique! In the excerpts I quoted, there are plenty references to Turkish butchery, but also with Armenians’ as well, to exceed in most cases! I have not portrayed Turks as angels; the same way the Armenian diaspora portrays their heroes, to be “angels but with rifles, daggers and ammunition” (replacing wings) from head to teeth! Plenty photos exist in Pastirmadjian’s book plus other examples before the war started. For more photos, please refer to “The History of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutiun 1890-1924” ISBN 88-85822-11-8 in the E-library. (Abandoned land and real estate properties were promptly returned to all applicants, who applied within two years after the Lausanne Treaty!)

Regarding the drama examples given in the last paragraph, the critic can be sure that similar ones and may be much more in excess, exist in the past of the Moslem families in the area, but still there are few examples of humanity on both sides. Since we do not have the concept of “blood purity” (which was the unfortunate words of Hrant Dink) we really do not care, who was the grandfather or mother, or relative. I have “no record that the Sultans married any Turkish women”, since their beautiful wives were mostly, later converts. Rumors are that even Abdulhamid had some Armenian blood in his past! Turkish community never had any ambitions on purity of race or ethnicity. This life-understanding common with most Turks, differs with many other nations claiming to be of pure Arian or other noble races. Inter-family marriages, give unfortunate results. May be we should be thankful for being bastards in some way or another. I absolutely agree with the statement about jackals and hyenas, and I will be pleased if the critic outlines “my statement” which concluded him to such a slander about my evaluation, amidst my efforts to show that none of us is angels and this NONSENSE BETTER STOPS!

Regarding Arnold Toynbee, there are nearly 30 references of this important writer, whose assignment was to write propaganda book blaming the enemy, which he did perfectly. Yet found documentation shows that he did not enjoy the lack of sources of the documents he had to use. He later admitted that all was “war propaganda”. If anything that I quoted from Toynbee is false, it better be shown and proven. Otherwise, we all can read!.

Let me conclude this section with the last sentence of the study of Edward J. Erickson (T-Armenians # 2438) in which he concluded: “However, a case can be made that the Ottomans judged the Armenians to be a great threat to the 3rd and 4th Armies and that the genuine intelligence and security concerns drove that decision. It may be also stated that the Ottoman reaction was escalatory and responsive rather than premeditated and pre-planned. In this context the Ottoman relocation decision becomes more understandable as a military solution to a military problem. While political and ideological imperatives perhaps drove the decision equally, if not harder, these do not negate the fact that the Armenians were a great military danger”.

If this, does not suit the critic’s ideology, he can object the writer and claim that he is just “another denialist”!

I do not agree with critic’s remarks about our personal past, involving dramas and the “ease to blame others for the consequences”, be mishaps of war tragedies and in this particular case, there was considerable risk of some adventurous leaders, who “gambled with the lives of their own nation!” I am surprised to see that the critic, who is fully aware of the rotten part of the apple, fails to confess or admit these naked realities!

PART II
I think that the critic’s approach to the subject of “genocide” is much different from my approach: There is no doubt that some or most of the stories of grandmothers may have considerable essence of truth. On the other hand, the very same in worse excesses is true for the Moslems. Almost all mass graves opened show Moslem victims, some burned inside mosques, others stacked inside water wells with stones on top. International witnesses abstain from attending any mass-grave openings! These butcheries are confessed in the writings of Armenian historians. These are “all individual cases” of bilateral brutality, which I admit, but the critic claims that “ all Armenians were maiden angels”. This is not what the books or Pastirmadjian or other heroes have said or written! In order that any crime can be called “genocide” it must be premeditated, planned in advance and carried in all stages without any exceptions. (Even Mr. Erickson just endorsed my opinion!)

The critic goes out of the line of common sense, by labeling all of the sources I have used as “denialist”, a term, invented to excuse and smear all others who do not speak or write up to their imagination! Who are the persons deserved to be denialists? Cyrus Hamlin (the father of Armenians), Khatchaznuni (Prime Minister), Nassibian and Lalaian (Historian), Pastermadjian (war activist and hero), James Grabill (Protestant Missionary and expert on all Armenian Churches), Margaret McMillan (granddaughter of Lloyd George) or the original documents in archives? I shall appreciate to be quoted “where I accused all Armenians” of being intolerant of dissent? This research has been made because of my attraction to several Armenian friends I have, and I feel sorry for the critic that “puts words I never said or written” in my mouth. Frankly, such distortions reduce my advance confidence in the neutrality, “personality and objectivity of the critic as a human of sincerity and decency!”

Regarding Orhan Pamuk (a novelist who was rewarded after he advertised the Armenian view, which paved his way to the Nobel prize (thanks to Maureen Freely who translated his books in English, being the daughter of a prominent literature teacher at Bogazici University, Prof. John Freely, who authored ISBN-975-08-0255-1, two volumes of “A History of Robert College”). Whilst Mr. Pamuk’s literary fame is controversial in Turkey, plus his proficiency in English writing (which should have improved by now), there is no doubt that he did not read even one percent of the sources given in my book! His grasp of history, may equal his knowledge of medicine! Regarding Taner Akcam, who was a sentenced terrorist – communist fugitive from prison but found his way to Germany where he was taken under the wings of Tessa Savidis Hoffmann, he was later transferred to USA where he became his Master’s Voice Dadrian’s and the Zorian Institute to which he owes all. I cannot compare my ethics and independence with his writings as a “sociologist on historical subjects”, nor his obligations! So far he did not show a single document to confirm his scenarios. He is the pipe blower of the Genocide Fanfare! I am amazed that the critic shows these two turncoats as witness or testimony, to suit their paymasters! Regarding archives, I have quoted what others have written and said. I have not used thousands of Ottoman documents, not to be subject to such objections. Here again, the critic puts the words I have quoted as words I have spoken or written myself. I have not used Ottoman archival material, which the critic claims to be selected, doctored manipulated, and edited. These are serious accusations, and unless they are proven they become as empty as the Genocide Fanfare! I regret to experiment such baseless aggressiveness employed in arguments from a person I had a high admiration. I do not want to believe that I was mistaken so badly!

Regarding added slanders such as “Choir and Allawa akbar”, I am amazed that a person for which I had a high respect, found the necessity of smearing such religious tar on me, in spite of my several excerpts against faiths.

Anyone who walks in a Turkish bookstore can find a multitude of books, and some translations advocating the Genocide fanfare, and almost none for the opposite view. My book does not sell in any bookstore. When I will have the Turkish shorter version printed (if I can find the voluntary publisher), it will be one of the few in response to the Genocide fanfare played loud in Turkey. I kindly ask the critic to read this posting # 2441 about the panel presentation at Bilgi University and posting # 2442 giving the speech of Ara Sarafian, which I responded separately. These two postings already prove that the critic could not rid himself of “Armenianism” when commenting. I do not think that you can find “any other person” who has put so many years of strenuous research to discover the truth (within existing contexts) and prove the uselessness of this Genocide fanfare, which has become a belief within the Armenian community of diaspora, equal or stronger than Christ!

I was “hoping” that the critic Ara bey would understand the sincerity of mine, and contribute to normalization. I hope that at least one of the two Ara-s (better be two) will stop this stupid quarrel -like two pans, blaming each as regards which bottom is blacker-! If the critic would admit that, the Dashnakist Armenians were in open revolt and full cooperation with the enemy, this may help to understand, how and why the eggs were broken! I think that people of logic should stop blaming each other in person or nationality, ethnicity etc. and get over with “what has happened has happened” and look forward for the future, built on compassion instead of grudge and hatred.

The book has no aims of any polarization, other than laying down some facts as written by anti-Turkish or neutral observers, in reaction to landslides of propaganda and monuments, to convert a myth into a reality. Don’t I have the right to put down, opposite views and documentation? If they are fabricated, this must be declared and proven! This topic cannot be resolved unless both sides stand on facts, and not on scenarios!

PART III
In reply to the questions, which the critic concluded, I would have preferred that these were based on “my own words, in the introductions of each chapter or added to the reference notes”. Yet, since every reader has a point, I would reply the critic’s friendly questions, in the same spirit, thanking him again for his compliments of “magnum opus”, which I hope he will have more time to penetrate the pages, instead of hopscotch touching! My work is a compilation of thousands of broken (chinaware like) mosaic pieces. Each piece individually may not tell much, but when all put together within the frame of realities, logic and chronology, it becomes quite visible! My “own personal conclusion” is that: There was no cause, no premeditation, no plans, no time, no means, no clear dates, no places, no murder tools, no reliable eye witnesses (other than individual or reported cases), no documentation, no solid evidence, no legal procedure, no court, no defense, no verdict… but a gigantic conclusion about the criminality of a nation, based on UNPROVEN PRESUMPTIONS! Bilateral brutalities, treasons, fights, killings etc. are on individual or tribal bases, where responsibilities can be laid on too many persons! It was the “Armenian brutalities” which was pardoned in the Gumru Treaty (Dec.3,1920)

  • 1- The first question is unique and patent of Armenian nationalism after 1965s. Until that time, there was no word of Genocide. The critic overlooks the reality that the short lived (Dashnakist) Armenian Republic was founded in May 1919 as an Ottoman Protectorate, and the legation sent to Istanbul to pay respects to Sultan Vahdettin, cabled back on Sept. 9th, compliments and good wishes! Why there was no word of genocide and why did the young Armenian Government searched for the protection of the Ottoman Empire, which had sent the Hamidiye troops some 20-30 years ago to put down the sporadic revolts and tribal wars? The Turkish State Archives, after the Oct.30,1918 Mudros Treaty, were placed by British under the charge of Armenian experts who combed every paper trying to find evidence to charge the 144 Ottoman dignitaries, taken to Malta for trial where they were held for two and a half years. The “documents of the Blue Book” or “Ambassador Morgenthau’s Story”, the “Andonian papers”, “fake telegrams” etc. were not found of any legal value, and the five neutral countries (Denmark, Holland, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland) when asked by the puppet Ottoman government in Feb. 1919 to appoint two judges for the international tribunal, abstained from sending any legal witnesses!

  • 2- I am not defending anything but TRUTH that I have discovered. This can be changed, but when opposing evidence is laid down. Until such time, it is my duty as a decent human (forgetting my nationality and faith or ancestry) to defend and delegate what I believe to be true. The Empire could have been rotten, there could have been lots of criminals and innocents! Don’t they deserve the right to be heard or defended?

Genocide is a very serious crime and unless it is proven any such accusations are of even higher ethical crime for something that did not happen in that context, but is a distortion of certain dramas to qualify for certain rewards by later generations! If we are to sooth and settle such imaginations or mythology of the “monster in the attic who killed your father/mother and ate them” etc., it means that we are wasting time in the wrong directions. The critic says that the “Armenian Way” is the only correct way! What I did, was to follow the Armenian footsteps and material and arrive at the very same conclusion, none of us are angels, we are all alike in benevolence or criminality!

  • 3- Ottoman Imperialism (despite her lack to cope with modern changes) has not destroyed the national and religious inspirations or assimilated any one in the countries they occupied! All these new states live, because they were majority in those lands and were untouched. The number of Moslems, which had to evacuate those lands, is over 5 million and we know that 2.7 millions died in those years. Armenia was too far away, had no true value for the Allied Countries which provoked her! The population was only a minority under 20% in the area. The rebellion had no chance in a serious evaluation. It was a very bad gambling not counting the results; they did and lost!

  • 4- Kemalism or last time “objectivism and realism” was the last string which saved an Empire of over 600 years and people who accept to be called Turks regardless of their origins, and I think that this is more of a virtue instead of a sin. Which man with minimal level of intelligence said that Armenianism is a capital offense? Who? Regarding Armenian irredentism, it is definite that the Dashkanist leaders turned down the offer of autonomy in August 1914, openly sided with the enemy, risked the lives of their own community, gambled on their own power and lost a WAR. If they decided not to return and make their claims, that was their choice! Regarding “claiming back the ship that was abandoned”, this has no logical or legal basis, nor any possibility of becoming true, more than an anecdote like the one of the critic about the fly and the elephant.

These dreams of consolation of being right but victimized, and hope for restitution some day, brings no bettering to the lives of the suppressed Armenians in Armenia, or the poor ones who came to a country they were told is their enemy; but where they work to support their families in Armenia. As one them had said when asked: “There can be no bad or good nation, but there are good or bad persons”.

I am not concerned about the diaspora Armenians who live in comfort and security within their offered liberties, who pay and employ a certain choir to propagate this myth and make their livings by investing these donations in monuments and museums of hatred (which no other nation ever thought or invented). Only in April 2008, Ken Hachikian sent his third letter asking donations! My concern is for the Turkish Armenian community, 95% Gregorian Christians with their own Patriarchate, versus a minority of about 5% Protestants exporting troubles from USA and Catholics from France, doing the same thing! It all takes one or two idiot Turkish fanatics to set fire to the existing peace and harmony of the Turkish Armenians, with whom we (at least I) feel as close as fingers and nails. Ottoman Imperialism offered all positions, titles, rights to the Armenian community as the “loyal millet”, whereas all other Western Imperialists injected and used Armenian aspirations for their own good, and then abandoned in full. I have been several times in Las Vegas, and I do not remember any slot machine that pays “jackpots to the loser!” (Gambling is very bad, especially when done on others’ lives!)

If I have left any point unanswered, my E-mail is inside the book. I am open to answer readers’ questions, but responsible only for what I have said or written, and not what I have quoted, showing the source!

Regarding book review by a certain Macreau, who apparently has not read the book from this E-library but comments to keep company in the choir of the tune he does not know, please note that:

I will answer this impolite approach only once and forever! I have no desire to deal with fanatics or those who jump into conclusions based on assumptions without respect to the personalities they charge like Don Quxiote!

  • a- What does my being born in 1930 or 1920 or 1980 has to do with the subject? Never mind what my age!; Just read what I have presented and answer those written facts! My “personality” or being product of what system has nothing to do with the essence. I strongly recommend the critic to read this posting # 1647, and understand “my total ignorance on the tactics of how to kill other persons, like they are teaching nowadays Elementary schools in Armenia”.

  • b- Regarding the “betting habit of this person”, I am afraid that he messes up “betting on documented facts” with horse or hound races! Of course I cannot read or write any foreign languages ! (I have used translators and interpreters to read and scan some 30.000 pages to pick up the excerpts! Any objections? I am not curious to learn his level of Armenian language proficiency, since we are corresponding in English. This compilation is not from the “glorified Turkish History”, but on the contrary, is from Glorified Armenian History and books! Of course, this person speaks in the air, because he just saw a review but not a line of my book! I wrote my bibliography! Had I known that I would be asked “how many foreign languages” I speak , I could have added a “fair level of Rumanian, Italian and French” as well, not counting my English which I could not learn in an American missionary College! They gave me a BA in Literature for walking around with interpreters! My research covers, Swedish, Dutch, German and a sack of U.S.A. papers. All references are given. If any can prove one to be doctored, I will declare myself a LIAR! He may start with the “Reno Evening Gazette” of Oct.14,1915 available in this library or my book pages 662-663. If he has any objections, he better protest the paper or the writer!

  • “ Armenian Genocide?” Sure, every one is free to sing the song he likes! (It needs not to be true!)
  • * Bask under the sun? Sorry, doctors do not recommend!
  • * Turkish masters? I have no masters, never had or tried to have one, except my own conscience!
  • * Spinmeisters? I spin no one, and none could ever dare touch or spin me; I am too heavy and hard on fingers!
  • * Coffin and nails? Turks use shrouds for burials!

(P.S: I sincerely thank my shadowed interpreter-translator who composed these replies for me, since the critic knows that I can speak no other foreign languages!)

BOOK REVIEW (PART I)
*********************************************
THE GENOCIDE OF TRUTH. By Sukru Server Aya. 702 pages. Illustrated. Index. Bibliography. Istanbul: Commerce University Publications. 2008.
*************************************************************
This mammoth compilation of quotations, documents, and polemics sets out to prove once and for all that the Armenian genocide is a figment of imagination, but it succeeds only in proving that the Turks take this figment very seriously.

In his introduction, the author (born in 1930) admits that he first heard of the Genocide in the 1970s when Armenians unleashed a campaign of terror by assassinating more than forty innocent Turkish diplomats. What he fails to mention is that on April 24, 1915, at least four times as many Armenian intellectual leaders in Istanbul, among them some of the most beloved names in modern Armenian literature, were arrested, declared guilty on grounds of their Armenian identity, condemned to death, and executed. He further maintains that the so-called “million and a half” were victims not of a state-sponsored policy of extermination but of badly executed deportations, war, atrocities committed by Kurdish and Circassians bandits, starvation, and disease, all of which claimed many more Turkish victims. It follows, if the Turkish state cannot be held responsible for these crimes, the Armenians have no case. Again, he fails to mention the fact that the properties of the deported Armenians are now in the hands of the Turkish state. Even if not guilty of factors beyond their control, the Turks are guilty of occupying properties that rightly belong to their original owners.

Considerable space is devoted to the discussion of Toynbee’s youthful anti-Turkish stance. What is not mentioned is that even after he acquired Turkish friends and adopted a pro-Turkish stance, Toynbee at no time denied the reality of the Genocide, which he equated with the Jewish holocaust during World War II.
If like me you were born and raised in an alien ghetto populated by Armenian survivors, this book will fail to convince you that everything you were told as a child by your parents, grandparents, schoolteachers, and community leaders was propaganda. But if you are a Turk born and raised in an environment where even uttering the words “Armenian genocide” is considered a criminal offense, the book will succeed in reinforcing your conviction that as a morally upright people, Turks cannot be held guilty of any crime against humanity, let alone genocide, and that all their accusers are no better than misguided and brainwashed dupes, fanatics, charlatans, and profiteers. To which I can only say, all nations produce their share of jackals and hyenas and I doubt very much if Turks are immune to these universal aberration. (More to follow.)

This book's contents are not surprising at all. Just consider the following : The author is born in 1930 and is the product of Turkish educational system ( read as glorified Turkish history). I even bet that he does not read or write any foreign languages so that he could consult foreign sources dealing
with the events of 1915.

As a matter of fact another nail was nailed to the coffin of Turkish spinmeisters. Until today we all talked about Austrian, German sources, and NOW we have found Swedish sources in Swedish archives dealing with what we all
know.....the Armenian genocide perpetrated by Ottomans.

Let Mr. Aya bask under the sun of is Turkish masters.....

BOOK REVIEW (PART II)
*********************************************
THE GENOCIDE OF TRUTH. By Sukru Server Aya. 702 pages. Illustrated. Index. Bibliography. Istanbul: Commerce University Publications. 2008.
*************************************************************
At one point Aya suggests that the Genocide may well boil down to stories told by grandmothers, implying they could hardly qualify as admissible evidence. Which raises the question: If you had a choice between believing the eyewitness account of a grandmother and the hearsay evidence of a politician with an ax to grind, whom would you choose to believe – especially if the grandmother’s stories were supported by countless articles in the international press some of which have now been collected and published in book form.
*
Aya writes: “Armenians are among the most monolithically acting people in the world today.” This assertion is contradicted by the fact that some of his most important denialist sources are of Armenian descent. He further accuses Armenians of being intolerant of dissent. As a result, he writes, the extremists are heard ad nauseam and the moderates are silenced. But isn’t that the case with Turks too? If Turks, unlike Armenians, are tolerant of dissent, why is it that Orhan Pamuk (a Nobel-prize winning novelist and essayist) and Taner Akcam (a distinguished academic), both of whom have dared to write about the taboo subject of the Armenian genocide, now live in self-imposed exile?
*
The Turks have made their state archives available to scholars, Aya informs us elsewhere, but the Armenians have consistently refused to do so. Speaking of Ottoman documents that support the reality of the Genocide, he dismisses all of them as forgeries, implying the documents in the Ottoman archives supporting his thesis have not been selected, manipulated, edited, and doctored in any way.
*
Genocide books (both pro and con) change no one’s mind. They only preach to the choir and the Allawa akbar corner.
*
If there is a moral to be drawn here, it is this: politics is a filthy business, writing history a complex operation, and propaganda the universal medium of all power structures, especially those that view themselves as morally superior.
*
Both Armenians and Turks are unanimous in asserting that the truth must be established and the controversy surrounding the Genocide must be resolved once and for all, even as one side continues to criminalize all mention of the Genocide, and the other to build monuments and museums, produce documentaries and movies, organize demonstrations and symposia, and publish an endless stream of books, editorials, commentaries, and polemics. As a result, both sides continue to be polarized with no end in sight. I regret to say the book under review succeeds only in contributing to this unfortunate process of polarization thus making the prospect of a resolution unlikely, perhaps even impossible. (To be continued.)

THE GENOCIDE OF TRUTH. By Sukru Server Aya. 702 pages. Illustrated. Index. Bibliography. Istanbul: Commerce University Publications. 2008.
*************************************************************
Finally, here are some questions that Aya’s magnum opus raises:
*
Is there a single nation in the history of mankind that has fabricated a genocide and believed in it for almost a century? – more than a century, as a matter of fact, if one includes the Hamidian massacres at the turn of the last century.
*
Why is defending the borders of a disintegrating and rotten empire (perceived as such even by Turks) with every means at one’s disposal politically justifiable and Armenian desire for self-determination a crime against humanity? – unless of course one subscribes to the principle of might is right or what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine also.
*
Who in his right mind would dare to assert that Ottoman imperialism or Kemalist nationalism is right or acceptable but Armenian irredentism a capital offense?

1670) Armenian Intimidation To Suppress Free Speech

Turk vs. Armenian at a Forum:

Cem: There is absolutely nothing you can say that can justify the forced cancellation of a peaceful gathering!

Kevork: Oh yes there is. ARMENIANS will not 'fraternize' with known and vocal genocide deniers. End of story. . .

It's what Prof. Heath Lowry referred to as the "Curtain of Fear," before that curtain came crashing down on him, thanks to the nefarious scheming of those such as Peter Balakian and his unethical "genocide scholar" allies. Dr. Lowry was referring to the difficulty for law enforcement to permeate the ranks of Armenian terrorists, "For Armenians know full well what their fate will be if they are labeled as 'informers' by the terrorists." (A classic example of which was the 1933 assassination in a New York church; in Ottoman times, the violence would be directed toward any loyal Ottoman-Armenian, in order to drive a wedge between the Armenian and Turkish peoples, such as with the 1912 assassination of Van's mayor.) Dr. Lowry's reference was back in the days when Armenian terrorism was raging globally, in the 1970s-80s; while the fanatics among the Armenians have largely stopped pointing their guns in recent years, the kind of terrorism they and their willing allies engage in is of the character assassination variety... while the threat of physical attack is never far away.

It's what made Franz Werfel, author of The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, keep mum after he learned he had wrongfully blackened the image of the Turks with gullible reliance on Armenian propaganda. (As his friend, Rabbi Amateau, acknowledged.) It's what made the friends of Prof. Erich Feigl afraid, asking the professor (in a manner of speaking) whether he was nuts to write the book, "A Myth of Terror." (The book's foreword on p. 6 began with: "'Have you gone crazy?' — 'Are you tired of living?' These were the comments of friends and acquaintances when they heard that I was working on a book about the causes and historical context of Armenian terrorism."): It's what forced Prof. Stanford Shaw to eventually leave UCLA after his colleague, Prof. Richard Hovannisian, told his genocide-crazed followers that Shaw was a "criminal," leading to constant harassment in Shaw's classrooms; some even bombed his house in 1977. There are fanatics among the Armenians who will stop at nothing to preserve the sanctity of "Hai Tahd," or the Armenian Cause.

The obsessed among them are working day and night to perform their "patriotic duty," for example, infiltrating school boards of the United States, to censor the genuine version of historical events, having an easy go of it thanks to the deep prejudice against Turkish people in the Christian West, along with Turkish apathy. With the help of the horrid genocide forces pretending to be pursuing a noble goal, innocent sounding organizations such as "Facing History" and "Teach Genocide" are providing the naive school system with their propagandistic teaching materials, feeding impressionable youngsters with the notion Turks are no different than Nazis, thus ensuring what keeps the Armenians together — their hatred — will be shared by the non-Armenians among us.

This page will examine examples of Armenian intimidation tactics to suppress free speech. We will begin with a classic example going all the way back to 1896, just to start things off with a bang, and to set the pattern for what is to follow... which will concentrate on more modern day examples.

Armenians Threaten F. Hopkinson Smith

The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette, Dec. 7, 1896

IMPORT THEIR IDEAS.

Armenians Seek to Suppress Free Speech In America.

Armenians Seek to Suppress Free Speech

New York, Dec. 7 — F. Hopkinson Smith, the author, artist and engineer, who has been vigorous in the use of his tongue and pen in defending the course of the Turks in the Armenian difficulties, has recently received a very unpleasant reminder that there are some persons who object to his statements. He has been, in fact ordered to cease giving his side of the story for publication under threat of dire consequences. While the threat was implied, still it was a threat, but Mr. Smith does not wish to consider it as such. He prefers to regard the affair as trivial, but his friends do not agree with him and are afraid something may happen to him.

Two men have called at his house and given him warning. The second said the Armenian revolutionary committee had sent word to Mr. Smith that he must stop defending the Turkish government. "They say I must stop, do they?" said Smith. "Well, I won't stop. I know the sultan is a broad-minded man, with a big heart that is filled with love for is fellow beings. I know the Armenians have goaded the Turkish people into committing the massacres with the view of arousing the sympathy of Europe. These things I know, and knowing them I am going to defend the sultan and his people."

F. Hopkinson Smith

F. Hopkinson Smith

F. Hopkinson Smith was an American of great integrity, taking the trouble to verify pro-Armenian claims, and going against the tide of Turkish vilification in his nation's press, led, for one, by The New York Times. Now we learn he was courageous in other ways as well. It was not only Armenians who came down hard on him, but the bulk of the 19th century racist bigots. The New York Times wrote one of its most unbelievable editorials as a result of their outrage against Mr. Smith's views. The reader may tune in on this page to learn more.

Thanks to Gokalp for the clipping.

An Armenian in Glendale: "They were like crazy."

In response to a charge of hatred against Armenians, I composed a ditty of denial (denial being one of my specialties, after all) but I defended my original words that brought forth the charge with a test: Find me an Armenian who goes public against the genocide claims!

No one has yet met the challenge, but I have found just such an Armenian. I have not spoken about him (Vahe Avetian), because he's alone and I did not want to invite any trouble for him. Yet he has not made a secret of his thoughts, this very brave Armenian, and his cover has been blown in other web pages... and it's obvious from the following article that the extremist factions are very well aware of him anyway... so I'm finally going to shed some light upon him. Especially because the story he tells here is such a frightening one.

The following was posted in a Yahoo group forum; as the author is not a native speaker and his account is sometimes difficult to follow, I have made corrections of a few (not all) typos and have put in my own paragraph breaks:

Subject: Support Network of Friends - Vahe Avetian: Argent!

Hello Dear Friends,

Vahe Avetian
I write this letter to inform you, that I am in Glendale, Los Angeles, USA, where I came to visit some friends, artists, to look around, to hold literary meetings if possible. As soon I came, I was invited to a literary meeting dedicated to Vahe Oshakan, in the municipal library. As soon I came in and sat down a gentleman whom I don't know told from the scene:

—"Hamazgayin" was always supportive to writers, to preserve of literature and the language.

—You are lying: I told from my place, and may be it was wrong.

— Thank you: the answer was.

—You are welcome: was my answer.

After the gentleman a lady whom I also don't know spoke longer, more interesting and less ambitions so it was fun and I head the time to realize that situation was embarrassed and some explanations shall be given. As soon the lady finished her speech, I went up to the scene, came to the microphone on a something big, with golden "HAMAZGAYIN" letters on:

—My name is Vahe Avetian. I am an Armenian writer, author of 6 books on three languages and I am accused in crime in the motherland where I do not live 15 years already, because of books of mine.

—No one wants to hear you! Shut up:

some one shouted from the hall and a couple of dozen people started to shout and scream and they attacked me. I really became scared, couldn't see properly because of the strong lights directed towards me. Some one was shouting:

—Record, record, and don't stop the cameras.

I thought they'll attack me and I dropped the first microphone on the floor. I turned around to go away and that big something with the second microphone was on my way. Couple of dozen fat asses was breathing behind me already. I pushed the thing and it felled down. I went farther, not successful enough. Hostile tribe of mine surrounded me and started to push, to scrim on my face all kind of dirt. Couple of dozen hating people. They were like crazy. I was not allowed to go away from the hall.

—Keep your hands away: I shouted on some one who was trying to hold my hands and keep me there.

—Call police: some one shouted.

—Already done: another told.

The police came. A lady and a gentleman from our tribe told them that I hit them. I didn't. I was not asked something properly. I was arrested, was brought to the Glendale jail by an Armenian police officer, who put 20,000 $ bail on me, in difference to the previous amount, 5000$, which was told by the other colle[agu]es of our compatriot, to my friends Sev, Armen, Anush, Narine and Gayane, who were with.

My friends couldn't invest the needed amount to bond me out, until they didn't found David, who paid the bail and I was freed from the prison on Monday. The arrest was on Friday evening.

I probably will write stories about the jail in Glendale in some future: I have lot of material collected, but let us go back to our tribe and my self. The police officer has dashnak orientation: I've heard from concerned citizens, living here. I spoke about the matter to a guy; the name was Bill Hamparian or may be some thing else, am not sure. He is participating in congress elections and nominated from the democrats or greens. He is also an attorney and public servant since 1990 as he told me.

—Be careful with Glendale police and dashnaks: was his resume.

—They are connected to the mafia.

I meet dozens in the streets of the Glendale each day and can't find out if those guys are commissars because of there convictions or they get salary from the motherland. Both cases are bizarre. Summary of the message: Every thing in Armenia is good, every thing in USA is bad and I shall keep my mouth shut, other wise it will be not OK and it is easy to kill a person in LA too. I am amused. The situation is so wearied, that I am not even scared. I just look around and wait. The first hearing in the court is on 25th of October and will see what is happening. Until then: I need your support, brothers and sisters. That is what my lower Angela Barsegian is telling: I am in a need of support network of friends.

Please be with.

Vahe

P.S. My English is not of the best quality, but the network of my friends is international, so I am going to keep the communication in English, but all languages will be welcomed and translated.

2006.10

WHEW! Pretty scary, ain't it!

Let's hope this courageous man came out of this scrap intact. I guess it will be a while before he visits friendly Glendale again. (I'm reminded of several letters I have received from Californians who have not had the most pleasant encounters from the less nice Armenians among them.)

Vahe deserves a deeper look, but for the present, let's put a few of his other views from this forum, accessible on this page if the reader [clicks here.] In the last entry, Vahe confirms that Armenians are "silenced in the entire Armenian, controlled media," and implies he may be the only one going against the tide ("Show me an other one. Tell me the name.") As far as the "genocide" is concerned, he could be right.

Thanks to Fatma for forwarding the post.

In a series of early June 6-7, 2006 posts, an Armenian left a message for Vahe in Turkish.

Vahe: What is this? I don't understend Turkish. Can you
translate?

[The answer]: It translates as follows :

Vahip Bey...oops..sorry Vahe the donme ( turncoat) this video is for you.

Vahe: Why these men call me like that?
...Have any one any idea why this man is angry at me?

Macreau: It is possible that you might have expressed yourself like a Turk..maybe?????

Vahe: Is there any special way that Turks express them
selves?

I met only few of them and they were not different from other human beings and were good fellows...

The rest I know from "history", which is totally manipulated.

So the question remains and the coward is not answering...

vahe

P.S. Turks and Armenians can't reconcile, until they haven't cured the sick in head people in respective tribes and judging from forums there are plenty of them.

Turkish Author Pamuk Calls For Free Debate Of Armenian Issue (a Journal of Turkish Weekly article that was posted on the forum)

ARMENIAN AUTHOR (ME) VAHE CALLS FOR FREE DEBATE OF TURKISH ISSUE

Why every body is possessed by this guy and no body writes about my double repression in my double motherlands: Armenia and Sweden?

I have double so shity now then Pamuk, but still every body is keeping silence in spite of the fact of having the maximum amount of readers almost in all Armenian forums during the last three years.

I haven't read Pamuk yet. I am busy with writing my self. He may be good for sure, but may I be better? Is there any chance? I don’t know. Have you read my books? How one chooses to read this or that book in general? Or may be this guy talk right things, in right places, in right time?
Don't I?

I confess, I am jealous...

I have double governments after me, and steal [still] no one

I am out of the crap. The only people who massacred me
and continue doing so, were and are Armenians.

The only massacre I witnessed with my own eyes, was
the one, which my people went through the last 15
years and the first instance to demonstrate against is
Armenian self appointed authority.

I am Armenian; English is not mother tongue, but I have a book written in English. No American or English complained about the language. What ever. The important thing is that I do not need
English to understand the word, since it is taken from Greek "genos" = "race" = "tsegh" (in Armenian.

If I will be so lucky that you read my books, you'll probably will understand my attitude towards "authorities". I do not let others to think instead of me, even Webster and Britannica and not less:
brainwashed Armenians, Turks and all others for that matter.

Genocide means - "race killing" - "Tsegh - spanel"

Killing of a person only because of his or her ethnicity is that killing: GENO CIDE, and that is what I, me, an Armenian writer, an going to teach even Webster and Britannica.

I have much more in my thought.

Re: [TURKISHARMENIANFRIENDSHIP] I want to try brotherhood

Dears,

This group is called Turkish-Armenian friendship. I don't see any reason for those who promote hate, to be here, if not for keeping silence and learn.

Trust me, we all were ottoman in 1000 years, and escalating hate was and steal is an integral part of ours, no mater Turk, Armenian or Kurd.

To all patriot Armenians who don't see Turks and Armenians as almost the same in almost everything, I tell:

Idiots! Shall I believe to what I see, or to your mambo-jumbo? These correspond equally to Turkish, Kurdish "patriots" and to all others who read these lines.

I tell this not only because I am a dreamer, which I am for sure and even more: I tell to every body that has " ears: to see, mouth to hear and eyes to talk: be careful with those who do not dream: they shall be very, very sick or they are no humans. Friendship can never be promoted by hate, not at least if it is not redirected towards a common enemy.

When I number the enemies of Armenians, I sea a legion already gathered for a fight, and among the problems we face now, Turks are becoming the problem number 6596576595876587574875 and even farther in the queue.

I don't think that things in Turkey are much better and in some way, they are much more complicated then ours and people living there, are one of the hardest working, but steal poorest in Europe, with all brutal consequences of inerrableness.

This corresponds to all of us, and if there are patriots out there, who are very proud of their performance and declare that they are a success and not less economically, I tell:

Istanbul and Ankara are not Turkey, Yerevan is not Armenia, Baku is not Azerbaijan, and Diarbekir is not Kurdistan.
More: our behavior is designed specially the way, to not let those things to become one. Our masters divide us and rule us. How many generations this words shall be repeated, to make
sense once. I am pretty sure that they were pronounced once, to
make sense some time.

May it be now?

My information is not coming only from Armenian and Turkish sources, but also from Swedish, where I am a citizen and politician, and I think that I am a damn good politician, and I welcome more comments about my being megalomaniac, since that is the best PR I can get for free, and the most important thing is: those who write, pay for their internet and invest their time.

Perfect for me!

I am damn good politician, because I was with to demolish Soviet Union, was a successful and victorious commander who won a war against soviet army, and was driven out among the first ones, when Soviet Union took over Armenia again: which is the case now, and promoted and promote hate towards Azeri and Turks.
I was driven out because I dared to pronounce then, that the enemy of our independence is Soviet Union or RF, no mater how you call the fascisms, but not Turkey and in no way poor Azerbaijan, which is sitting in the same shit as we.

I am damn good politician, because I was with to implement and lead a party which has the power in so many years. Quality sucks for sure. I never had the time to fulfill that part.

I am damn good politician, because it took only two years for me to declare that I am going to challenge the Swedish Royal Parliament, where I found refuge in exile, and I participated in the elections there, in 2002.

I lived as a politician so long and in so different surroundings, that I may tell today as simple as it is:

I am damn good politician, who is charged for crimes because of books he wrote.

What do I need to know more, and what I need to present, to prove my being right?

Those who do not agree, I call idiots and brainwashed dupes beforehand. The only way to prove the opposite is to show me a
single Armenian citizen, who challenged the congress of Untied States or any other parliament of the world in couple of years.
There isn't a single one. You may check.

I am a megalomaniac?

Can be. I think that I am just a reasonable man and a
damn good politician and that is exactly why I am exiled, charged, and not aloud to enter the country, participate in the process and am silenced in the entire Armenian, controlled media. Show me an other one. Tell me the name.

I do not tell all this to prove that I am good. I know I am. I have been told about that by so many wise people in so many countries, that I don't even fill [feel] ashamed to speak about that as more or less objective factor. I am telling this, with hope that you may realize that a professional is talking now, not just an armature [amateur] form www, and I am constantly hindered to tell, to expose, to prove what I tell now:

Once we seat down, learn the history together, put all facts we have together, we are going to see that we all were and are a bunch of idiots, sheep who were slaughtered, are slaughtered and are meant to be slaughtered.

Once we learn the history together, we are going to find out, who were our masters and the enemies and those who masterminded killings. We are going to find so many enemies, that we are going to look like “snow whites” to each other.

Armenia is occupied. The self appointed leadership is not representing people and their opinion. What you hear and read, are designed by KGB/FSB.

So never tell Armenians tell. Armenians are hindered to speak.

All those Armenians, who promote genocide business and keep silence about the occupation of their country by Russians, are KGB agents, if not, then even worse: They are pathological idiots and dupes.

Turkey has more diplomatic experience; it is almost 100 years old republic. There should be professionals for sure who are aware of the things I write about. If they don't speak today, that only means that they are corrupt and criminal. I am not surprised. I told already: I do not see differences in us.

If we will not cooperate now, we all are going to vanish as states, or become miserable.

Kurds, Assyrians and the rest: Keep dreaming.

The Los Angeles Times finds some backbone!

Unbelievable! There's a new sheriff in the L.A. Times who does not accept Armenian claims at face value, which is colossally brave of him, given the numbers of Armenians who live in California. (Cue above article.)
Kevin Roderick
Kevin Roderick

Kevin Roderick of L.A. Observed gives us a rundown ("Armenian genocide dispute erupts at LAT," 4-24-07), following the tradition of reportage of this kind, not making any secret of his sympathies with the Armenian perspective. (Roderick is a former L.A. Times'er.) He quotes at length an attack by Harut Sassounian, activist and publisher of the California Courier.

As he did with a PBS executive (in his column, "VP of PBS Should Be Dismissed For Insulting Armenians") who was totally on the side of the Armenians (in relation to PBS' propagandistic documentary, it was her office that declared PBS accepted and acknowledged the "genocide," and she who said the "genocide" was "settled history"; the exec's sin was in opining the "genocide" was not exactly on the same level as the Holocaust), Sassounian demanded the LAT managing editor, Doug Frantz, be fired.

Harut
Sassounian

Naturally, the immediate question coming to mind is, Who the hell is Harut Sassounian to be demanding such a thing, and why is Kevin Roderick giving Harut Sassounian such importance?

From personal interaction on my end (within a forum), it became quickly obvious that Sassounian's historical knowledge, surprisingly, is very little for such a "widely quoted leader of the Armenian American community," as Roderick describes him. His style is that of a bully. He's got a few of the qualities that Sir Mark Sykes raised of Armenians, regarding "The pride of race [that] brings about many singularities." Arrogance is one, leading naturally to making threats.

Doug Frantz

Frantz's problem: he did not feel that the Armenian journalist, Mark Arax (who made Frantz's privately written e-mail available to Sassounian, which Sassounian published, of course) was objective. Well, DUH! Frantz was correctly trying to follow the newspaper's ethics guidelines, which took a lot of guts; regarding the "genocide," the L.A. Times has no ethics guidelines.

Sassounian had the gall to write that the Times' editor, Jim O’Shea, told Sassounian that Frantz "has a very abrasive personality" (If O'Shea said such a thing, no doubt he did not suspect his fellow "journalist" would make such a private opinion public), and then charged, "No wonder he (Frantz) was short-tempered and abrupt during a phone conversation that he initiated, falsely accusing this writer of threatening him..." (What? Harut Sassounian would have made threats? Why, that is absolutely unheard of!), and follows up with writing of "the lack of freedom of speech in Turkey," and winds up comparing the distinguished historian, Andrew Mango, with "David Irving, the infamous Holocaust revisionist."

Jim O'Shea

Naturally, Sassounian knows no shame, and his genocider-brother-in-arms, Arax, threatened with a "Federal lawsuit for the possible violation of his civil rights." Meanwhile, Sassounian further tells us that the newspaper's publisher (David Hiller) and Editor O’Shea "reassured this writer last week that they would not tolerate any executive who has a bias against the Armenian Genocide and discriminates against Armenian-American employees." Hoo-boy!

"It is hard to imagine how Frantz could continue working at a newspaper in a community where more than half a million Armenians reside..." Translation: who cares about the truth. What counts is to appease these genocide-obsessed Armenians.

Roderick followed up (April 26) by reproducing a memo O'Shea sent to staffers (isn't that sort of thing supposed to be kept in-house?), where O'Shea made clear his newspaper's Armeni-mania: "Over the past two years, the Los Angeles Times has run 67 stories on Armenia or Armenians, including 26 on the Armenian genocide resolution and 13 that dealt specifically with the political fate of the resolution. This does not include editorials, op-ed pieces and letters to the editor. No one is trying to censor anyone." (Unless, of course, if that "anyone" is aware the historical facts do not support genocide.) At least another reproduced letter, from Asst. Mng. Editor Simon Li to an LA Weekly writer, raises questions about Sassounian's tactics: "any innuendo that Doug is scheduled to moderate this panel (in Turkey) because he shares the views of any of its participants — or the particular views of one that Sassounian condemns — is at best reckless and at worse maliciously prejudicial."

Mark Arax

In another entry ("Dare we call it Genocidegate?" Apr. 26), the very Armenian-cooperative L.A. Observed gave us a taste of an Arax e-mail to his colleagues at The Times: "Because his logic is so illogical, questions must be raised about Frantz’ own objectivity, his past statements to colleagues that he personally opposes an Armenian genocide resolution and his friendship with Turkish government officials, including the consul general in Los Angeles who’s quoted in my story. Frantz is heavily involved and invested in defending the policies of Turkey." Particularly with the last sentence, the Armenian writer is presenting a claim as a fact without proof. What kind of "journalism ethics" is that?

Notice how the L.A. Times' bigwigs are simply shivering in their timbers, at the slightest threat from extremist Armenians... instead of commending Frantz for shielding whatever little credibility left with this newspaper. (Particularly since the shake-up with their top editor from not long ago, bending to corporate whims completely; expensive international reportage was to be left to other newspapers, such as The New York Times, and the L.A. Times' emphasis would now largely cater to the news of local Angelenos.) That's Armenian intimidation at work.

("Don't stop 'till you make 'em say" ANCA soon got into the act, mobilizing a campaign to oust the "unfit" and "disreputable" Frantz. The fearful Jim O'Shea, in his memo, even went so far as to commend a petition Arax and other Armenians prepared, reminding the newspaper that "genocide" should be stressed, not only by going against Frantz's terming of this petition as a petition, but gratefully acknowledging the reminder-favor performed by Arax and the rest of his hateful crew: The L.A. Times' guidelines specify the matter should be labeled a genocide, and, by God, there should be no deviation from this sacred policy no matter the facts. It is as though the spineless and/or prejudiced editor-in-chief rolled over on his back to be fed a biscuit by Arax and Sassounian. Mustn't upset the precious Armenians.)

A reader, Stephen, commented:

Well, at least Frantz wasn't accused of being in the pay of the Turkish Gov't.

It is interesting how historians, like Andrew Mango, who disagree with the genocide characterization of the events of that time, are always characterized as notorious genocide "denialists". It seems to me that when ethnic Turks and Armenians are removed from the discussion, that independent historians researching and writing on the issue, on the whole, tend to favor the Turkish position on those events. Given the pressure in the West (violent ASALA type in the past, more political and financial today) for historians to comply with the Armenian position, it is rather surprising that any support the Turkish position at all.

Mr. Frantz seems largely to be guilty of having lived in Turkey and discovered that there is another side to the story, one that is perhaps a little more convincing than the one that he had hitherto been exposed to — and worse to be honest enough to say so.

In any case, this Sassounian seems to be quite the extremist, if his statements were quoted accurately. I suspect that he has personally seen to it that the Turkish position has been purged from the history departments of California universities.

(Holdwater: Of course, that is not the "Turkish" position, but the "Truthful" position.)

University Conference Deep-Sixed

Here's how a Turkish source described the following example of Armenian intimidation:

"Ambassadors Gunduz Aktan and Omer Engin Lutem arrived
in the USA to give a conference at the University of Southern California on March 28, 2006. However, the scheduled event was canceled with one day's notice, without any reason, just due to pressure by the Armenian Associations." (Here is the Armenian, or ANCA, version.)

I learned of correspondence a reader had with Joshua S. Fouts, of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy, which had organized the event. Copies were sent to other USC personnel.
Joshua Fouts

Joshua Fouts

Mr. Fouts was reminded that the aim of USC's Public Diplomacy Council lies in believing "that understanding and influencing foreign publics, and dialogue between Americans and the citizens of other countries, are vital to the national interest and the conduct of 21st century diplomacy." Dialogue cannot take place if only one party demands its voice be exclusively heard. So why was there a lack of backbone, in the face of Armenian intimidation? How is it that in the United States of America, with our amazing Bill of Rights guaranteeing Freedom of Speech, a university conference as this can be canceled?

ANCA-WR Chairman Steven
J. Dadaian shares the same
name as an LA-5 terrorist.

ANCA-Western Region Chairman (he is now a board member) Steve Dadaian put the pressure on Fouts by writing a letter to him, dated March 22, partly stating: "USC has an Armenian-American student body of over a thousand students whose families are the direct descendants of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by Turks and now officially denied by the Turkish government," with the not-too-subtle threat that there may be hell to pay if the event were to go forward. (USC's Armenians can potentially be a force to contend with.) Not that the threatening wasn't clear, as near the letter's conclusion ANCA's chairman grrr'ed: "...if USC chooses to proceed with this program, our organization will be forced to take further action to protest the University's complicity in providing a forum for genocide deniers."

Also in the letter, Mr. Dadaian shamelessly equated the Turkish ambassadors as "neo-Nazis," and — irony of ironies — pointed to yet another Armenian-embracing editorial of The Los Angeles Times (we just covered them above) as the "evidence" for genocide. (The "editorial clearly states, the facts surrounding the Armenian Genocide are not in dispute.")

In his reply, Mr. Fouts explained the reason for the cancellation was "simple," implying Armenian intimidation was not a factor. The originally proposed topic was a different one, he explained, dealing with public diplomacy, and a discussion of genocide would not have applied.

Our reader wrote back, saying he was now confused. The event was on the books and the stage for negotiating the topic was well past. An announcement was made, the Turkish ambassadors were on a tight schedule in their visit to the USA (they happened to give a talk in New York City on March 26, and their flight to California for this March 28 appearance must have already been set), prompting ANCA to have written their protest letter. (The opening paragraph of the ANCA press release stated: "The Armenian National Committee of America ... learned on March 22nd that a planned conference at the University of Southern California [USC] featuring leading deniers of the Armenian Genocide was canceled," adding the conference entitled “Turkish-Armenian Relations: The Turkish Perspective” was scheduled to take place on March 26th; the date was likely a misprint.) In short, the decisions were already made.

In his following response, Mr. Fouts elaborated that the topic he agreed on with the Turkish Consulate on Feb. 27 was to be on "'Turkish Public Diplomacy,' specifically the role of Civil Societies in improving Turkish-Armenian relations." What transpired was Mr. Fouts happened to be out of town "when an intern received the event description and posted it on our website without consulting me." Worse, the title referenced by ANCA was not seen by Mr. Fouts until "three days before the scheduled event. It was at that point that I notified the consulate that this was not the event we agreed on and was not central to the topical interests of a Center on Public Diplomacy."

Regardless of whomever posted the event description on the site (could the intern's name have been Rosemary Woods?), isn't it true that the event description had to be prepared from the inside? That was the question posed by our reader in his follow-up letter. After all, the Turkish Consulate would not have worded the USC web site's description and the control was entirely in the hands of USC's Center on Public Diplomacy. So the decision to cancel had nothing to do with the Turkish Consulate's doing anything wrong, as in making a last-minute demand that the topic needed to focus on genocide. If someone from the inside made a mistake, chances are the Turkish Consulate would have been cooperative, and the event still could have been held with the necessary descriptive corrections. At any rate, "genocide" was not even part of the event description (as one gathers from Dadaian's protest letter; Fouts did claim in a TMCNet article [referenced below] that genocide was mentioned in "The final description that was e-mailed," but that is different from the description posted on the web site that Fouts stressed in the correspondence with our reader), and the title referenced by ANCA ("Turkish-Armenian Relations: The Turkish Perspective") still could have fallen within the realm of Mr. Fouts' title description (highlighting "the role of Civil Societies in improving Turkish-Armenian relations"). So isn't it true what really happened here is that the Armenians flipped out when they read "The Turkish Perspective," as that is one perspective the Armenians cannot tolerate?

In any event, our reader reminded Mr. Fouts, if a talk was to be held with Turks and Armenians as the subject, the genocide matter would have been inevitable, as that is what the Armenians and their allies have forced Turkish-Armenian relations to boil down to.

Mr. Fouts replied that he wasn't sure of what else he could add, and concluded with the assurance that his center has had "an excellent relationship with the Turkish Consulate and we do intend to work with them to schedule a session on the topic we originally discussed."

A wrap up article ("Canceled USC event featuring Turkish ambassadors draws controversy," TMCNet, April 14) quoted the Consul General of Turkey in Los Angeles, Engin Ansay, as saying that the USC Center for Public Diplomacy "enthusiastically welcomed our efforts," and upon hearing of the cancellation, "We were astonished, flabbergasted, because where is the freedom of speech?" Evren Ugurbas, former president of the USC Turkish Students Association, wrote in an e-mail to USC administrators that the cancellation "was a grave and embarrassing mistake (the university) made by cowardly resorting to censorship under partisan pressure by local activists." Fouts insisted, however: "As much as the Armenian community would like to take credit for (the cancellation), it was just a coincidence."

In his final letter, our reader politely informed Mr. Fouts that precisely because Fouts is a specialist on diplomacy, he probably did not wish to come out and say the Turks had reneged on the deal; as that would have been the only way in which a cancellation would have been justified. It just seemed too unlikely, however, for the Turkish Consulate to have had the power or even initiative to have dictated their own wording. Therefore, if the error of putting up a notice without having checked with Mr. Fouts belonged to Mr. Fouts' department, then curtailing the forces set in motion at the last minute would have been unduly harsh. "It just would not have been normal to pull the plug entirely."

The reader added that the positive manner in which Mr. Fouts described relations with the Turkish Consulate indicated the Turks would have been cooperative, and thus would not have rudely demanded that the talk center strictly on genocide. Conclusion: "The timing of the ANCA protest letter, along with other Armenian pressure tactics, leading directly to the last minute cancellation could not have been a mere coincidence."

At this writing, over a year has passed, and there appears to have been no sign of this event being rescheduled.

One of the other USC bigwigs, who was and still might be the USC Vice Provost for Globalization, was cc'd copies of the correspondence (he seems like an amazing fellow, where students were falling over themselves in praising him, in usc.profguide.com; "the best professor in the world," is how one described him), sent a refreshing response to Joshua Fouts:

"You are a hell of a diplomat......."

Was Ara Sarafian Leaned On?

As we have seen, it's to be expected for zigzag maneuvers to result after being hit with Armenian intimidation; few of us would want to admit being scared, or if the victim of the intimidation is an Armenian genocide activist (or even a plain Armenian), even to make it seem as though there are Armenians who serve as bullies.

(That kind of thing would go against Hai Tahd, where the whole idea rests upon Armenian victimhood. The fact that there are "bad" Armenians or even Armenians who act as aggressors, is a possibility that must remain hidden to the outside world's odars, in order to best sustain the genocide con job. Arthur Derounian explained the phenomenon of maintaining the Armenians' Myth of Innocence: "Unfortunately, some timid souls are horrified at the exposure of (bad) Armenian prototypes... This attitude is based on the premise that our faults should remain unpublicized to 'outsiders.' Why? Are we not at least as human as our native-born American brethren who themselves claim no monopoly on virtues? Are we Armenians 'superior' to all other ethnic groups? Are we a 'race' apart, free of weakness? Denying that self-analysis is a virtue, the timid souls would even deny that our frailties are common to humanity everywhere.")

In Feb. 23, 2007, Azg (mainly relying on the reportage from the Turkish Sabah, Feb. 21 ) informed us Ara Sarafian "accepted" the offer of the Turkish Historical Society's Yusuf Halacoglu to "study together the Armenian allegations of genocide." (There were flirtations between the two around the same time, regarding the coverage of mass grave excavations, as peeked at in TAT.) Sarafian was reported as explaining that he had accepted Halacoglu's idea at an Istanbul conference in March 2006, and Halacoglu appeared excited, opining that Sarafian's openness was unprecedented, given that no preconditions were insisted upon. (Usually, Armenians demurely refuse to come to the table unless the other party accepts their genocide.)

But the party was over before it began. In "Sarafian bows to diaspora pressure, says Prof. Dr. Halacoglu" (March 10, 2007, The Turkish Weekly); Sarafian wanted out because of his disappointment that Ottoman records — ones Halacoglu had previously "qualified as meticulously kept," according to Sarafian — would not be ponied up (sounds like there might have been preconditions after all), after getting the news from a Halacoglu TV interview where the latter said Sarafian might come up dry in the Ottoman archives.

Halacoglu reacted in a press conference by "urging" Sarafian to specify which documents Sarafian said Halacoglu had, adding, "Mr. Sarafian has probably been subject to pressure." He pointed to the Armenian-Turkish newspaper Agos as mentioning "that the Armenian diaspora was very angry with Sarafian because of his proposal to study together with Turkish historians."

As the soap opera continued (Zaman, March 16; "Turkish, Armenian historians quarrel over failed study initiative"), Halacoglu insisted that he "never said that we could not open some of the archives or that we cannot show some documents." Meanwhile, Sarafian stuck to his guns because the documents he wanted were not in the archives. "This is an incredible statement. I expect Halacoglu to clarify what this means."

"A joint Armenian-Turkish study on the Genocide is proposed — but will it go forward?", written by Chris Zakian (managing editor of the Armenian Reporter, which is probably where the article appeared) informs us that Sarafian (in his press release of Feb. 26) required a look at the "deportation" records, "village by village, person by person, showing when people were deported, where they were sent, and how they were resettled. There should be records of their original properties and how they were compensated at their places of exile." Sarafian explained that "The Turkish official thesis maintains that the deportations of 1915 were an orderly affair and all relevant records on those deportations can still be found in Ottoman archives in Turkey."

In return, Sarafian would present the relevant records for Harput that would explain "abuse," "massacre," and "genocide," and not simply "deportation." (Of course, if the Armenians were truly "deported" — that is, banished outside Ottoman borders — the Ottomans would not have records as to "where they were sent, and how they were resettled," since the Armenians would have been in lands outside Ottoman control. Sarafian has already not displayed the best intentions, contradicting himself with the wrong terminology. In addition, "abuse/massacre" is one thing and "genocide" is another. Nobody is saying some Armenians were not abused and/or massacred.)

So let's see... who is getting the better of this deal? Sarafian is going to offer his "relevant records" already widely available in Armenian propaganda, such as the opinions of Harput's U.S. consul, Leslie Davis, and missionary Maria Jacobsen; those are what fair-minded folks would call "irrelevant records." (If Sarafian were in possession of factual proof demonstrating an extermination policy, there would have already been huge headlines, and there would be no need for this song-and-dance.)

Sarafian copied 3,000 documents from the archives. (Sari Gelin.)

Meanwhile, Sarafian, who has already combed through the Ottoman archives on his own in previous years, is after the juicy stuff that we are to presume has not been made publicly available. The question is, has Halacoglu or another representative of the "official Turkish thesis" (that would be every single Turkish historian save for the Taner Akcam variety, because we are told that all Turkish historians dishonestly and mindlessly march to a nationalistic drumbeat) actually promised these detailed "deportation" records were available?

Ara Sarafian

The page where this shot of
Ara Sarafian was taken tells
us he received his M.A., and
will be receiving his Ph.D in
history from Papazian's
University of Michigan, with
"history professors" as
Libaridian in on the racket,
in order to give genociders
a scholarly shoo-in. Not
unlike how Taner Akcam
received his Ph.D, with
Vahakn Dadrian allowed to
perform the blessing.

(To quickly digress, Zakian's article quotes Professor Gerard Libaridian as opining that "Halacoglu... does not inspire confidence as a historian." This comes from the former Zoryan director, now working as a history professor in Dennis Papazian's University of Michigan stronghold, who tried to pass off Aram Andonian's forgeries as genuine history.)

Returning to the Zaman article of March 16, Halacoglu defended himself by noting "that he did not have the legal authority to impose restrictions on archive documents," which sounds correct, since Halacoglu does not run the archives. He went on to blame "the Armenian diaspora for failure of the initiative and said Sarafian bowed to pressure from the diaspora."

It seems to me that if Sarafian's condition was this critical, he would have made sure to get a guarantee, before he gave his okay in February. (At the time Halacoglu reported "no preconditions" by Sarafian. Someone isn't telling the truth, regarding this point.) It also seems to me that if Ara Sarafian was sincere about a joint operation, there would need to be good faith to begin with (In March 16's Zaman, Sarafian was quoted as saying, "I am not a supporter of the Armenian diaspora who criticizes Turkey without talking to Turkish historians and looking into the archives. I am in favor of trying to work in and with Turkey as much as I can"), which means preconditions would be out of place, and in bad taste — particularly when Sarafian has nothing of value to offer. When you agree to work as partners, you go in there to see what the both of you can do for each other (and, much more importantly, in the area of real scholarship, for the aim of finding the truth). At that point, if you sense a level of dishonesty from your partner, you can always bow out.

Yusuf Halacoglu

The Zakian article spelled out the Armenians' fear: "...the prospect of such a joint collaboration has received mixed reactions — especially in Armenian quarters, where some insist that it could play into the hands of Genocide deniers who would relish the opportunity to claim that the historicity of the Genocide is in some sense an 'open' scholarly question." (If the Armenian side does not have the proof, of course this nonsense would constitute an "open" question.)

So what do you think? Do you think Sarafian bowed out (as soon as he agreed to go ahead, "considering that cooperation in this study will be a firm background for further researches," as Feb. 23's Azg reported) because Halacoglu did not come clean? (And it doesn't sound like Halacoglu promised Sarafian anything to begin with.) Or do you think Sarafian couldn't take the pressure from his fanatical tribe, as he already experienced in his past, when he made a go at scholarly integrity? "Genocide" is, after all, Sarafian's livelihood, and to become an outcast in Genocideland is the kiss of death for a genocider; Sarafian's old buddy, Hilmar Kaiser, is currently paying a price for his loose cannon ways.

A Canceled Concert

Brown University's Daily Herald reported a concert featuring Turkish and Armenian musicians was abruptly canceled "after the Armenian musicians and the president of the Armenian Students Association received threats from members of the Armenian community." ("Turkish-Armenian Concert Canceled Due to Threats," Debbie Lehmann, 4/9/07.) The Armenian Students Association (ASA) and the Turkish Cultural Society (TCS) "organized the concert, titled 'The Armenian Composers of the Ottoman Period,' to promote dialogue between their communities... dedicated to Hrant Dink." A TCS member claimed the operation had its roots six months prior, "to encourage conversation."

"The TCS member wrote in an e-mail to The Herald that the Armenian musicians and the president of the ASA did their best to resist the 'warning messages' they received. However, he wrote that 'the situation got serious,' and the musicians, followed by the ASA, withdrew from the event. The musicians and the ASA are now 'in a very difficult position against some parts of their community,' he wrote."

The president of the ASA, Ruben Izmailyan, "said he was disappointed the event was canceled but declined to comment further."

We've been through this ground many times before. Yet another clear case of Armenian intimidation.

But hold on! Armenians don't like to be "outed" with their intimidation practices, so naturally Izmailyan decided to loosen his lips afterwards. (And, of course, whenever there is "unfairness" against the Armenians in the press, the press bends over backwards to let the Armenian views be known. In this case, not only did the follow-up article quickly appear the very next day, but a disclaimer was put at the top of the first article. This is the exact opposite of how the press usually behaves when there is unfairness against Turks.)

"Concert Not Canceled Due to Threats, ASA president says" reported Izmailyan as stating "that he was not in any way 'threatened, intimidated or even asked to pull out."'

Let's keep in mind the concert had been planned for about six months, and was scheduled for Friday the 13th; The Herald reported the cancellation took place in its edition of the 9th, with only four or five days to go. So something dramatic must have happened to cause this cancellation which both groups were so gung-ho about.... right?

Let's take a look then, at Izmailyan's explanation. He " told The Herald the cancellation was a joint decision between the two groups after the Armenian musicians decided not to participate."

(A "joint decision." As though the Turkish side would have had any say in the matter, at that point.)

Okay. So the Armenian musicians decided not to participate, after half a year of enthusiastically working toward such an end, in the interest of Turkish-Armenian friendship. We are to assume they received pressure during this time, and were doing a good job of resisting such pressure, as the TCS member believably reported.

Why did the Armenians suddenly wish to drop out?

"[B]ecause many members of the Armenian community expressed concern about the 'potential misuse of the event.' The musicians 'did not wish to participate in an event that the Armenian community was not united behind.'"

While it's a sure bet no one stuck a note to Izmailyan's front door, attached to a threatening A.R.F.-style dagger, reading "BELIEVE ME, YOU DIE" (as in the glorious days of old), who does he think he's fooling?

Armenians=1; Holdwater=0

Back in September 2005, I wrote a letter to Dr. Sam Vaknin for having composed the usual mindless article (entitled "The Armenian Genocide," 9-6-05, The Global Politician, "an independent magazine providing objective, in-depth analysis of events in the world today.") thanking him "for being such an enthusiastic propagandist mouthpiece." I also sent a copy of the letter to the editor, adding, "I believe the responsible thing to do would be to engage in genuine fact-checking before allowing an article that is hateful and propagandistic." Usually, editors ignore such communications from the contra-genocide side, but this one did not. He wrote back, in a Sept. 25 e-mail that his publication does not publish letters to the editor, but "If you would like, you can revise your letter into an article and we'll publish it."

That was one offer I wouldn't refuse; the article, "The Armenians: Suffering, or 'Genocide'?" was sent off. At this point, the editor, David Storobin, asked for my name. I replied, explaining I thought he understood the sensitivity of my situation. There was no response, so a couple of months later, I followed up with another letter, ending with:

There are times a pseudonym can be acceptable, as with the Clinton expose by "Anonymous," as you may recall.

Regardless, I'm a man of my word, and even if I make the mistake of forgetting a condition at the time of the deal, I feel what should take precedence is the deal — once my word is given. You stated flat out that I can convert my letter into an article, and that you would publish it, without any conditions. Regardless of whether the "rules" occurred to you afterwards or not...

...I feel the honorable thing for you to have done was to keep your word.

The only exception would have been if you felt the article was not up to par, which I don't believe was the problem.

On May 2, 2006, Mr. Storobin responded, "Ok, fair enough," and agreed to go ahead with the publication of the article. He asked whether I can submit the piece again, as he had lost the version sent in September. It was a lucky break, allowing me to perfect the article even more, and on Jan. 15, the article was sent off, with a note:

"Thanks again for agreeing to put this up. If 'Global Politician' has at all an image of being cutting-edge, not to mention courageous, I don't think this article will hurt it. And those who know the real truth about this matter will regard your publication with much respect."

Once the article appeared, I wrote to a friend on Jan. 20: "The Global Politician editor did a little chopping up, as he excised references to the original article that I had originally responded to. He did a very sloppy job, that's why there are mistakes. But the article is mostly intact, and I am happy about that."

On Jan. 22, I received a letter from a reader titled: "Your article has vanished from the GP."

I wrote the editor, making sure to thank him for his courage, even if he ultimately faced too much heat from the forces of intimidation. He replied, "Everyone, including some writers who have nothing to do with Armenians complained" that an article should be published without revealing the name, and that such does not look good for the article, ending with the worry that his publication will suffer.

I replied, "Everyone has an opinion, and it is easy to become
influenced by people's opinions. But you are the editor/publisher, and you made the decision. Every rule has an exception. I don't feel you needed to explain yourself to anyone...

Of course, you are entitled to change your mind. But, again, if you spell out conditions and seal the deal with your word, it is not honorable to go back on your word. If the credibility of your publication was such an important factor, the time to have dealt with it would have been at the time you made the deal."

I reminded the editor of the 60 Minutes story that the producers got
cold feet on, sacrificing 60 Minutes' reputation as a crusading beacon of journalism, and then continued:

"What separates the men from the boys in journalism is to have the courage to report the facts, no matter the repercussions," as Ben Bradlee with Watergate and Edward Murrow with Senator McCarthy. "There is a news black-out on the direction that I'm coming from. If you believe these genocide forces are not always truthful, and they perpetuate racism and hatred in the perpetuation of their own agendas, then you would have performed a valuable service in helping to crack their facade."

"This journalistic duty makes the credibility issue pale in comparison. You would have been helping to add balance to the scale, working toward the time when someone as myself would not need to hide behind a moniker."

Naturally, I didn't expect a reply and didn't receive any. This example is not as straightforward as the others, representing Armenian intimidation, but from the editor's answer to me, it sounded like he was hit mostly by Armenians. For example, an Ara Sarkis Ashjian sent a call to arms in the Yahoo group, Azad-Hye, writing "Global Politician" ought to be hit for compromising "its credibility by publishing for persons concealing their identities and distorting historical facts."

Harut Sassounian appears to have approached the editor after the fact, writing about the "vicious revisionist article denying the Armenian Genocide" on the Global Politician site, asking for an explanation as to the removal. "If it is for his fake name, I thank you for your wise decision." Naturally, Sassounian made the editor's private response (of Jan. 25) public. A gloating Armenian has reproduced the response here, which was basically what the editor had told me directly. Interestingly, there is the additional claim that the Jewish Advocate also removed a genocide article which dared to use the qualifier, "alleged."

"Both Global Politician and the Jewish Advocate, by the way, had published materials on the Armenian genocide before publishing denialist lies. It seems they both admitted their mistakes by removing the denialist writings."

No, it has nothing to do with realizing the facts are incorrect, and everything to do with not being able to stand up to pressure.

A few other sites reproduced my article before Global Politician iced it (which I also mentioned to the credibility-conscious editor, adding, "Won't it raise eyebrows if readers find the article has disappeared from the source?") one of which is flash-bulletin.de/2006/eJanuary17.htm#4. (I see the article has also been posted at the forum of armeniangenocide.com, but the moderator has wisely removed it.)
