3533) US Government Has Given Turkey A False Sense Of Cooperation On The Genocide Accusations For Years - How the US government ‘nudges’ its Armenians

Soft Power, Samantha Power And Soft Intellectuals
    Tal Buenos*

While using the Armenian issue as a political leverage against Turkey, the U.S. government has given Turkey a false sense of cooperation on the genocide accusations for years

Power considerations explain the lingering genocide accusation campaign against Turkey. In international relations, power means the ability to get another state to do what it otherwise would not do. From the perspective of the U.S., how does it try to get Turkey to do things that Turkey would otherwise not do? The fact that the U.S. and Turkey have been enjoying mutually beneficial military and economic cooperation has two clear meanings. One, it would not be rational for the U.S. to threaten Turkey through military action or economic sanctions and two, there is a strong incentive for the U.S. to find ways to maintain this high level of cooperation either through obvious rewards or through a semblance of them.. . .

Do not be fooled by the song and dance; the Eurovision Song Contest really is about international politics.

This year’s edition of Europe’s top kitsch-fest, which will be held in Vienna May 19-23, had already promised plenty of intrigue, with Ukraine withdrawing from the contest, Russia organizing a competing event (while still going for a Eurovision win), and the decidedly non-European nation of Australia planning to make its contest debut. . . .

3510) "Genocide Denier Attacks Shark in Australia"

I am not a big-time barrister in London, I am not even a recording artist. This is not a gig for me. I am committed to studying facts. I am finding them.

This is my first time here in Australia.

Upon arrival yesterday, I heard some stories about sharks.

Considering the media here, I imagined how interesting it would be for a headline to read “Genocide denier attacks shark,” and

in the story the “genocide denier” would be quoted as saying “what shark?”

Israeli scholar of international politics, Tal Buenos, has taken aim at celebrity barrister, Geoffrey Robertson QC, and other media personalities who have jumped on the genocide “recognition” bandwagon.

Tal, in a recent speech over lunch to NSW Parliamentarians, in the Parliament House, called into question the accusation of genocide and denial against Turks. In a wide ranging, and well researched presentation, Tal also debunked the comparisons made between the Armenian experience and the Holocaust, and pointed at the politicisation of history that is inherent to such comparison.

The term “denier” is part of an attempt to silence any dissent on this topic, and to delegitimise any scholarly work on the topic that does not conform to the established orthodoxy. Tal drew a clear distinction between those who question whether the events of 1915-1916 could be called a genocide, and the very real menace of Holocaust denialism. Unlike Holocaust deniers – denialists in the true sense of the word – the Turkish Government is not denying the factual events.

Tal studies how the term genocide – its origin and current misuse – is tied with political purpose. Contrary to accepted wisdom, he asserts that promoting the events of 1915-1916 as a case of genocide is in fact a political game, aimed at keeping pressure on the Turkish Government.

Tal also canvassed the material facts of the events themselves. He presented a fresh, original view of what has become, at times, a tired and sterile debate.

3497) A Hundred Years Of Solitude: How Will The "Armenian Question" Develop In The 21st Century?

    Rizvan HUSEYNOV

This year the world community is preparing to mark the centenary of the First World War (1914-18), one of the bloodiest clashes between the leading empires which radically altered the geopolitical map and the socio-political structure of Eurasia. The bloodiest clashes in this war took place in Asia Minor, the Black Sea region and the South Caucasus, in the struggle for which the countries of Europe and Russia met head-on with Ottoman Turkey. One of the watchwords that Russia and the West used to base their intervention in the region was "to save Christianity".

It would not be wrong to say that the "Armenian question" played quite an important role in the military-political games of the West and Russia against Ottoman Turkey and the Muslim population of Asia Minor and the South Caucasus. During the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century the European empires and Russia generally made active use of the Armenian factor as an ideological tool to promote their own interests in these regions. To back up their claims these empires created and set in motion a hastily concocted story about ancient Armenian history, declaring its heirs to be the present-day Armenians led by the Armenian Church. On fairly dubious and anti-scientific theses a false conception was created that 1,000 - 2,000 years ago various state formations existed in Asia Minor which were wiped out, and "justice" should now be restored, turning history back a couple of thousand years. This thesis, which is absurd from the point of view of logic, was one of the reasons for the fierce clashes in Asia Minor and in the South Caucasus, as a result of which hundreds of thousands of innocent people were killed.

3412) Historical Prism - 1919 Atrocities Of Armenians Through The Eyes Of A British Diplomat

    23.10.2013

In early 1919, the UK government recognized its further presence in the South Caucasus financially and politically impractical. In early April, in Paris, the Supreme Council of the Entente took the decision to withdraw the British troops from the region.

On August 28, 1919 British troops were withdrawn from the South Caucasus, leaving a small garrison deployed in Batumi to prevent the immediate dispute between General Denikin, Georgia, and Turkey on the ownership of the port.

At the same time, realizing that there existed forces that could cause a fall of the young republics at any time, the British government sent a diplomatic mission to Tbilisi led by Oliver Wardrop, which arrived there in August 1919. The British ambassador was instructed to insure British interests, to provide moral support and advice to governments of the republics — Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia without the involvement of the Government of His Majesty in any form of extended liability. He was also entrusted with prevention of enmity between the countries of the South Caucasus, as well as between the latter and Denikin. . .

Lisbon Operation Was A Blood Scattered For Justice: Estimates Brother Of Died Simon Yahniyan

GYUMRI, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS: In order to capture the world’s attention to Armenian genocide thirty years ago on July 27, 1983 five members of Armenian Revolutionary Army Vache Taghlyan, Sedrak Ajemyan, Simon Yahniyan, Ara Krjyan and Sargis Abrahamyan entered Turkish embassy in Lebanon. From the shot Turkish soldier 21 years old Simon Yahniyan was killed and the other four managed to enter the territory of the embassy and implement two blasts. Though many countries began speaking about genocide after this event but after several years many people still distort the details of martyrdom of Armenian young people. “Armenpress” spoke about the operation with the brother Simon Yahniyan Sareh Yahniyan who lives in Gyumri for already ten years.

1)Nagorno-Karabakh - A Forgotten Conflict - An Introduction To The Special Issue
by Umut Uzer And Adil Baguirov

    Abstract

In the general area of Southern Caucasus, the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh is among the frozen disputes in the region, the others being South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which are nominally independent states, however de facto occupied by Russia. Pre-sently there is a cold peace in all these regions with the potential to turn into armed con-flict. The fact that the three historically significant countries in the region, namely Russia, Iran and Turkey are very much interested in Southern Caucasus can make any clashes in the region turn into a regional war with wide ranging repercussions.

This state of affairs makes the Caucasus a highly sensitive area of the world for war and peace. Focusing on the NK conflict with its historic, political, security, ethnic and anthropological dimensions, the collection of nine scholarly papers in this special issue of JMMA make serious contribution to the study of world politics in general and regional issues in particular which involve major international players and global security policies as being played out in the Southern Caucasus

For fear of losing ourselves in developments unclear, we only bolded the passages that seem most important and serious contradiction with the contents of the screenshot below.

3364) Infuence of Ethnic Lobbying on US Foreign Policy

© This content Mirrored From TurkishArmenians Site armenians-1915.blogspot.com by Rafiga Gurbanzade,
    4 August 2012

Lobbying is generally defined as the process of seeking to influence a government and its institutions to execute policies that serve interests of a group of individuals. The Woodstock Theological Center defines lobbying as a “deliberate attempt to influence political decision through various forms of advocacy directed at policymakers on behalf of another person, organization or group” (58). The earliest instances of lobbying date back to ancient Greece and Rome, where lobbyists sought to influence senators and plebs for or against specific issues (Zetter, 6). Special interests protected by lobbying may vary from businesses and politicians to foreign governments and ethnic groups. Ethnic lobbying may advocate interests of a distinct group in the host country or may seek to influence foreign policy of the host country towards the country of origin or third countries.

    Vahan Kololian
    by Faruk Arslan *

I can not find a clear answer to that question in my mind: Each nation and each community who speaks a different language may establish a state, should they do? In the past, state-building experience poor Kurds and Armenians were the ones whose ideal of an independent state, has to be constantly postponed. Armenians, in 1991, Armenia got this dream with a dead birth.

Kurdistan’s birth is delaying because in the process of pregnancy it had a gestation period that is full of anomalies. Thus, it is inevitable the baby will be born deformed; it will be trouble for its guardian and also his neighbour! Head nurse at the birth of Kurdistan, who had to flee from Iraq, the United States, midwife, the financier, mentors Israel and Germany; the child not crippled but was born dead.

It has been a surprise for the Armenians as much as for the Turks when French President Nicolas Sarkozy, during his visit to Armenia on 6-7 October, called on Turkey to recognize the Armenian genocide allegations and indicated that if not, France would adopt the draft resolution on punishment of genocide denial. Thus, despite the fact that France had always been a supporter of the Armenian theses all along, no French statesman had gone this far and no one had particularly called on Turkey and assigned it a certain date to accept the Armenian genocide claims.
